he Battle of Poltava on 27 June 1709 was the decisive victory of Peter I of Russia, also known as "the Great," over the Swedish forces under Field Marshal Carl Gustav Rehnskiöld, in one of the battles of the Great Northern War.
>>
>>3033241
But why did men cry? Because it was the beginning of decline of Swedish power?

I know it sounds like I'm trying to set up some joke about the Swedes but I'm honestly just curious.

Also the Swedes are enough of a joke ;).

They're a contemptible lot.

Polish nobleman visits a Protestant town around the time Sobieski left to relieve Vienna:

>All men of the Catholic faith were gladdened by our monarch's resolve, except the Lutherans and Calvinists, for they considered that war as their own; they beseeched God to give vitory to the Turks, saying it was to their advantage and siding with the oppressed Thokoly and all the Protestants.

>I was in Gdańsk [Danzig] at the time; and at all the church meetings they were praying to God for a Turkish victory. If they guessed from reading the newspapers that things were going well for Thokoly, that he had strangled a few Germans somewhere on a raid, forthwith they were triumphs, forthwith gratiarum actiones. "Och, Her Got! Och, liber Got!"

>They were selling pictures of Thokoly in full armor, on horseback; handbills were no sooner printed but they were sung at once by the sellers. Once, I'm walking along and one fellow is singing; I'd had a few quaffs, and I ask, What he is singing about that everyone listens so keenly? They said it was news of how Thokoly is winning out over the Emperor. The fellow singing, having heard me inquire, shows me the writing in German, "Ja, Pan [Sir], buy it, buy it!" I ask "How much?" He answers "A copper. [Groschen]" I gave it to him. A throng of peasants followed me to a tavern looking for some coin. I say to one slyboots "You'll have a zloty, my good lad, if you wipe your backside with this paper." The peasant with great relish drops down his pants and he rubbed his bare behind with those bills, then he tossed them into the [river] Motława.

>The Germans began to murmur, to grumble; I went off. The Catholics and those who watched the incident from the boats nearly burst their bellies laughing. However, when I was telling the Catholic townsmen, also some Dominican fathers and Jesuits, they told me: "Lucky for you, it didn't start an uproar, for Thokoly gets nearly divine veneration here."
>>
>>3034391
Some more

>I, having been advised to buy horses at a certain trader's in Nowe Ogrody (precincts in the direction of Oliwa), set out there late one Sunday afternoon when nearly everyone in Gdańsk goes out for a walk or a ride. On my way back from the trader's, it began to rain. The weather being fair when I left, I had not taken my cloak; so then, I stopped at an inn to wait out the rain. Those Sunday strollers were also running for shelter wherever they could find it, several of them slipped into the room where I was and sat down at some tables; they began to discourse about the war.

>I did not understand their discourse, no more than a few words here and there: later, however, the fellow I shall write about explained it to me (and there's a heavy downpour outside, water flowing in the gutters like rivers). Looking out the window, one of them says: "Ah, God grant there be streams of Catholic blood flowing in Vienna like that water." Another one says: "Our hope is in God." But one German - sitting apart from them - shrugs his shoulders, rolls his eyes to heaven, glances at me, saying nothing, only shaking his head.

>I see it but do not understand why he is doing it, nor do I understand the words the others had spoken, nor do I ask him, for I do not know the fellow and do not trust him. Until once again they speak of the king in these words: "But what did that stuffed swine go there for? What business of his was it? May they both, king and emperor, hear the clank of shackles!"
>>
>>3034397
>Meanwhile, that one sitting apart from them could restrain himself no longer, he being a Catholic. He was German, though not from Gdańsk, from some Prussian town; a trade broker who had dealings with the merchants. He, addressing them in Polish not in German, so I would understand, utters these words: "I thought I was sitting among Christians, but I see I'm among pagans; I thought I was among men, but I see you are beasts; is it permitted to talk such crimes? May you be hanged!" And they seize their daggers; he had but a reed cane. One of them wanted either to smite him with the flat of his dagger or perhaps slash him; he parried with his cane; the other wounded him slightly. He calls out to me: "Your Honor, they're talking against the king!" I to sword, the Germans take to their heels, but twas a bother to run off toward Gdańsk after them.

(Also, Thokoly was a Protestant rebel who threw in his lot with the Turks in case people don't know that detail)

Symbol of Carthage, it's referencing the First Punic War.
>>
>>3033525

He didn't fall ill, he was doing personal reconnaissance and got shot in the foot by a skirmisher. So on the day of the battle, he couldn't stand or ride a horse, and left command to his competent but not quite as good Field Marshall.
>>
>>3035644
First Punic War, Carthage basically had free reign of the Mediterranean at the beginning of the war. Romans couldn't into naval design until a storm washed a Carthaginian vessel to their shores at which point they reverse engineered it, put a big ass bridge on the top that they could use to board enemy ships, and beat Carthage senseless.

Actually they only used the bridge a few times. It turned out mounting a huge bridge on your ship makes it prone to tipping over and shit, especially in storms.

The Carthaginian navy lost because Hanno the "great" demobilized the Navy and allowed re to rebuild theirs, then Carthage panicked when their untrained supply fleet lost since they didn't unload their cargo before battle.

Autistic, memetic, heretical cult. All the different denominations were founded by batshit crazies, and some people lapped it up because the church was admittedly corrupt. So instead of trying to reform the church from the inside, they decided to divide Europe more than it had ever been before, ushering an era of chaos. They then always acted against the interests of Christians everywhere. Liever Turks dan Paaps indeed, even the French who fucking allied with the Turks AND the Prostestants didn't do as much harm.

My personal belief is that it was yet another plot by the Germans to destroy Europe. Notice that all civilised people promptly rejected protestantism and only people with inferiority complexes or unusual greed adopted it.

The thing that irritates me most about EU4 is that you can have so few vassals and client states. Even if you optimise for it you can only get up to 7 without taking penalties, and that's with no other allies. So you can't really have a proper sphere of influence and have to just annex everything.

And thus the Great Meme War waged on. You may hear stories about their heroic deeds from word of mouth or romanticized about it through different forms of media. But there was nothing great about the countless lives of all the shitposters that got doxxed or banned. Sure, we heard about the stories of Stickman and HanAssholeSolo, but where was the story about the /r9k/ poster that wen to war to make himself a better person only to be banned on Twitter, or the libertarian old fag that got slandered on the Reddit front. Their stories will remain untold and the same goes to thousands of unnamed shitposters.
This was Memetic War.

Finished an Ethiopian mega-ethnostate game recently, took Influence and Expansion for a total of 6 diplo slots. Ethiopia is hilariously good at having vassals though, once you've conquered up to Jerusalem your prestige hovers at over 100 passively so you can just placate rulers indefinitely. I've never actually used the convert culture thing on a large scale before, but with religious and influence ideas it's actually very worthwhile., -45% cost from religious and the rel+influence policy coupled with the -25% from adjacency leaves the cost at -70%, and that's for a 30% increase in everything from that province.

Also hilarious to see Amhara culture stretching from the Cape up to Constantinople and all the way east to Western India. It was like playing a Russia whose coast was the richest sea in the world instead of a frozen pond.

Welp, i can't play shit outside Yurop because the technology cost is flat in my version :^)
Anyway, it's looks like fun to play some African nations, even though most of them start with 1 or 2 in tech, while yuropean have always cheaper cost tech and the best tech.

Btw, i was playing France, but i was very poor you know, it was 1671 and i was only gaining 110 per month by trading, like wtf ?
I was the first power in both English Channel and Bordeaux, i should have taken the (((merchants))) doctrine.

By the way, idk if it was worth it to take Humanist ideas, you know, France have the special event "L'Edit de Nantes", which grants me 25% damn religious unity plus Humanist, i got 150%.
Looks like i was overcaped

>>3045153
>Holy fuck how did you manage to reach that much overexpansion? Is that from the Spanish territory?

uh
I took almost all of the brasilian spanish colonies, and i thought that it was gonna automatically switch into French colonies.

I almost forgot to legitimize the colonies, and i was like "wtf ? I legitimated the iberian spanish territory, what could go wrong ?"
>>
>>3045210
I find humanist to always be a waste. If you're playing smart there's no reason why you'd need it. If religious unity is your concern it's better just to take religious ideas. Also lol yeah you have to already have a colonial nation in that region for them to switch automatically to your control.

As for trade, I find it's best to center my expansion and colonisation, especially in the East, around coastal centers of trade and estuaries. If you have the art of war dlc (I think), you can even just threaten small countries and make them give you their ports. then you springboard from there. When I was playing Netherlands I conquered my way down the West African coast and then back up the East coast, stopped once I had full control of Zanzibar, then conquered the whole Malacca trade node. Also took control of the Carribbean through some costly wars with France, and managed to have exclusive colonisation of the North American east coast. So I had the trade flowing from the East Indies around the Cape, up to Gold Coast, then all the way to the Carribbean, up through the East coast, then to the North Sea and down into the English Channel. Took a while to set up but once it was done I was earning ludicrous amounts, almost 1000 ducats in trade alone IIRC. Every province I owned had a university and a manufactory.

Also reminds me of a good point: manufactories. For some reason, the further away provinces are, the more the goods they produce are worth in terms of trade once they hit your home node. So building a ton of manufactories in the East Indies can be extremely profitable if you have the capital to set it up.

Also a good point to note is that you don't necessarily need to dominate the whole trade route, just the points that decide where in Europe the trade actually goes. Let the other powers do the hard work of colonisation and conquering where you can't be bothered to do it yourself and then just steal all that juicy trade income at Bordeaux, Gold Coast, or the Carribbean. they'll be pulling it all in the rough direction of Europe anyway. Gulf of Aden is also a good chokepoint to control.

Well, i'm gonna always take Humanist ideas anyway, since i'm a disgusting warmonger, and i really need the Cultural ties which grants me 2+ cultural promotion, -2 National unrest and 10% cheaper doctrines ideas cost, which help me immensely since i have to legitimate and stabilize my empire quit often.
So, if i have a Theologian, -3 + Humanist - 2 + 3 stability, i can have perma -8 National unrest, which is really insane for an aggressive player like me.

Well, i focused into the Americas, since i had to destroy portugueuse and spanish empire, or they would without doubt crush me, specially spanish, since they had many many claims agains't my colonial subjects, and i also didn't had enough diplo power to buy all the mechants ideas, since i've got the De Valois family the ENTIRE game, and they gave me pretty shit monarchs, except in military case.
At least i was rich enough to buy all the time a +3 advisor.

I also took all of the two America, except the english Argentina, since i didn't had any interest in it, but it was not so much worth it since i had only 3 merchants.
I should have colonized the East Africa too, since they give FREE merchants if you have some trade company with at least 51% of the trade power.

uh
University ?
Don't all europeans nations start with it ?

Well, i didn't need that money so much since i was the first power in all fields, but yeah, i should capitalize in that point.

that's how i almost crushed my empire, since i usually don't have claims agains't their colonies.

>University ?
>Don't all europeans nations start with it ?
Nah, not in the current version. Now it's a thing where if you build a university it's cheaper to develop the province, and depending on the year it helps you technologically as well. Wow so yours is the version before forts became a major thing? Interesting. Warfare was way different back in those versions. I remember it was always one or two huge battles then a massive rush to get a stack on every province as quickly as possible before they can recruit another army.
But yeah I find the way to do massive expansion is really just maximising income. If you have enough income you can use mercenary infantry completely with no regulars, meaning you take only tiny manpower losses in all your battles, so you can be at war just about all the time. And the reason I don't bother with humanist is because with that mercenary infantry core you can just squash rebellions when they do pop up, while using the points you would have invested in humanist to take admin or expansion instead; which give much more tangible benefits. Basically all humanist does really is stop revolts, which your army can do anyway, while the others give much bigger more tangible benefits.
Also that's a huge Austria. Is it your ally?

I also have Common Sense, but i don't play with since i don't like the fact that i have to use my monarch points to develop every single state to be at least a decent kingdom.
But it's also because i don't know when i should develop my country and when i should buy doctrines, since both are very very expensive in the beginning.

>one or two huge battles then a massive rush to get a stack on every province as quickly as possible before they can recruit another army

o fug boi you know what i feel, almost 2years for a province with like just a level 2 castle.
And this is for every province, much fun much wow

> you can use mercenary infantry completely with no regulars
They are so expensive if you are not playing Ottomans and/or without administrative ideas, even if you are a very rich nation.

desu, i don't really like admin since i usually don't hire mercernary, except when i'm really threathened by a rival or a coalition.
But i take every time diplo/influence and expansion, so i don't mind too much about.

>Also that's a huge Austria. Is it your ally?
Yeah, i really needed a ally when both Spain and Portugal designated me as rival, even though i was basically the ally of Spain (I bet he is regretting his choice), and Austria didn't have any powerful allies, so he instantly accepted my proposition, since Burgundy and Poland were a direct threat to him.

Oh, Burgundy didn't explode, was very surprising btw since they are really aggressive with almost everyone.

Developing is fun. Playing Netherlands I had all my provinces at 20-40 development, with all the coastal provinces at 30+. Felt really cool. It basically depends on what type of game you're playing. If you care mostly about trade and colonisation, and don't intend to fight your rivals that much, development is good. Focus on your lowest development provinces on flat terrain first, as it gets massively more expensive the more developed the province is and the more difficult the terrain is. It lets you gain the development that you would by conquering without actually going through all the diplomatic and military effort of conquering. I'd say the main downside is that you don't actually get to weaken your neighbours by stealing their stuff, but if you have the ability to threaten war then you can slowly and peacefully expand by passively bullying your neighbours.

Why don't you update to the newest version? In my honest opinion, it is much much better.

The thing with Admin is that it also reduces coring costs by 25%, which is huge. In a rapidly expanding empire it saves you a huge amount of points, and honestly, in addition to making mercs very viable, I feel like it's the single most important idea group to get for a big empire. Also, mercs replenish really quickly, so you don't need to have that many of them to keep your front line from being depleted. I generally use a 2:1:2 ratio of infantry:cavalry:artillery, so less than half my army is mercs anyway.

I know that feel. They have made it much less likely for an ally or friend to become your rival in the newer versions though.

>eveloping is fun. Playing Netherlands I had all my provinces at 20-40 development,

I used to cheat in a normal game to see what could happen if i'd develop very much my country.
Welp, 100+ both production and taxes, by 1444, kek.
I'd really like to play with Common Sense, but since the 1.12 patch, any european cores is so disgustingly expensive that i don't have any desire play, plus the fact that i always have to keep in eyes my development, my ideas and my technological level.

In summary, I just can not adapt to the changes
But i'm still trying to git gud, but little by little you know, and i also don't have so much time to play and focus on improving.

> threaten war then you can slowly and peacefully expand by passively bullying your neighbours.

The way you phrased your sentence is really funny aha
But threathening war also give you some AE, don't it ?

>Why don't you update to the newest version
Also because the newest versions isn't fun without the shit tons of dlcs.

>The thing with Admin is that it also reduces coring costs by 25%,

Tbh, i usually just conquer spanish and portugal provinces to weaken them, and so i can expand my colonial empire, and colonies don't cost this much, so i don't care about the coring cost at all

>I feel like it's the single most important idea group to get for a big empire

Since i like the vassal-feeding, i was pretty fucked up.
So even with diplomatic ideas, couldn't do shit.

I bought the Art of War collection, including all dlcs before AoW.
They didn't gave me AoW.

With common sense I reformed the Roman Empire as Byzantium, despite how ludicrously expensive French and northern Italian cores are. That's why the admin ideas are so important! The reduction in coring cost also reduces the cost of annexing vassals by the way, which is useful as well.

Lol yeah it is funny, especially when I was doing that as Ethiopia in like the 1600s to the East Indies. They'd been completely untouched by Europeans for centuries and developed big colonial empires over all the Pacific Islands and the Phillipines. Then I just showed up with like 30 heavy ships and demanded everyone's important trade ports. Threatening does give you AE, but not enough to really be worried about.

>DLCs
Yeah I almost got memed as well. Bought the EU4 collection expecting all the DLCs and instead got a handful of useless ones and all the pointless aesthetics DLCs. Got a refund though and just bought the Cossacks, Art of war, and Common Sense.

Yup, got the Basileus and the Mare Nostrum achievement. I didn't actually dismantle the HRE. I was allied with Brandenburg the whole time and instead of directly declaring war on HRE states I just declared on their allies with Brandenburg's help, and alone they're actually pretty weak. My "starting point" in ~1650, before I began ALLE KRIEG, was the whole Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea, with some control of Far East trade and footholds in North-Eastern Italy. My main strategy was just declaring war constantly. Like from about 1650 to 1790 or so I wasn't at peace for more than 2 years. The core of the strategy was to stomp on any alliances or coalitions that start forming before they can be a threat. So if Burgundy starts a coalition against me, I immediately declare war on Burgundy, fight them and all their allies, do individual peaces with all of them and force all of them to break all their alliances while taking as much territory as I can. Then rinse and repeat. The first few wars were extremely difficult as I was essentially fighting the entirety of Western Europe at one stage, but the staying power of mercs combined with quantity ideas meant I could bleed their manpower dry while still being able to replace my own losses.
As for the heretics and other rebels, I just squashed all their uprisings and converted them as quickly as possible, and also raised autonomy in all the provinces I took for that -10 unrest. Having conquered Rome, Jerusalem, and Mecca, I had a lot of missionaries to work with. The other thing which helps a lot is that the way forts work in the new versions allow you to build a network to protect your country from rebels, which I of course did.
By trade ports I just mean important centers of trade.
And yeah, Paradox is irritating me with their business model now. The stuff they're putting out is really good, but it's just so horribly overpriced.

Also, they added a new feature which really impact the game, the system of duchy, kingdom and empire, does a tiny piece of shit like the Byzantium empire in 1444 can really invite to an alliance to a bigger kingdom like Brandebourg ?
A bit surprising though.

>So if Burgundy starts a coalition against me, I immediately declare war on Burgundy, fight them and all their allies, do individual peaces with all of them and force all of them to break all their alliances while taking as much territory as I can.

Tbh, i can't do this since i always have a very huge penalties both AE and diplomatic reputation by doing such tricks (Wondering why they are always in a coalition agains't me, i did just full annex a very tiny HRE country with only one province :^))

>The first few wars were extremely difficult as I was essentially fighting the entirety of Western Europe at one stage

tf ? As Byzantium ? Did the Brandebourg Imperium helped you ?
How did you manage to survive agains't the kebab tho ?

> and also raised autonomy in all the provinces I took for that -10 unrest

I really hate to do this, since i lose very much both commercial power AND taxes.
Can you also lose manpower by rising autonomy ? (Since Common Sense)

>By trade ports I just mean important centers of trade.

ah kek i thought that you did just take their ports, without the province itself.
Oh, btw, by threatening war, when the target country give you the province, it is automatically legitimized ? Or you also need to spend your own points legitimize ?
