Sure, some low level samurai (and when I say "low" , I do mean lowest of the low, formed ashigaru who became classified samurai due to Toyotomi/Tokugawa changes) joined or became employed by the proto-Yakuza due to lack of work, but the vast majority of the Yakuza still trace their roots to pimps, gambling houses and street peddlers/con men. Those "many" who think the yaks are heirs of samurai tend to be yaks themselves, or weeaboos.

before we get over zealous with the idea that no, samurai were ever honorable because of the sengoku period b.s. remember not all were the same. Also, the samurai meme with bushido became relevant during Tokugawa period. So yes, to a degree,"the honorabu samurai" did exist but not when samurai were actually relevant.
