Right at this hour back in 1520 Hernando Cortes was crying in a giant tree for all the treasure lost in the lake.
The event was named La Noche Triste ("The Night of Sorrows") on account of the sorrow that Cortés and his surviving followers felt and expressed at the loss of life and treasure incurred in the escape from Tenochtitlan.
Cortes ordered the construction of small portable bridges with which to cross those bridges destroyed. He also gathered all the treasure of Moctezuma and gave permission to all to take the gold that they thought fit.
They began to leave the city in silence, taking great care that the horses did not whiten, they carried all the war supplies, and they all carried what they could plunder from Montezuma's treasure, they would be rich and they would save their lives.
