How much (or how little) did the US military and intelligence community know about Japanese language and culture during the war? Were they relying on a few weebs in universities as experts, Jap Americans, Jap turncoats, or all of the above? How important did they consider this information to the war effort?
And vice versa--how much did the Japs know about American culture?

A lot of Japs went to American and European universities, most famously Yamamoto, so the Japanese probably had a better idea of the average American than Americans did about the average Jap. At least in the beginning

Did this do anything to mitigate their fanaticism?

To a degree, once they knew the Pearl Harbor attack and declaration of war were hours apart would mean an America that would never accept a negotiated peace

Peep this Frank Capra directed propaganda film created to educate common Americans about the Japanese. A pretty good resource to learn both what the brass in the government knew, and what the average American thought (who probably didn't know shit about Japan outside propaganda like this). Its actually pretty well researched.
