Did they melt down the rest to make other things or what?
Most iron objects rarely survive past a couple hundred years in soil or highly preserving environment (like in a peat bog) whatnot, unless you live in a naturally dry place like a desert, but even then, unless it's properly preserved environment, it's still prone to decaying to the point of being unrecognizable in 500+ years.
