I remember reading about one badass guy from varangian guard who saved byzantine emperor from some assassin and his reward would be fucking emperors greek wife, was this common practice in Byzantine empire monarchy?
Also /varangian guard/ thread i guess. Were they the only reason why byzantines lasted so long? Since we all know that greeks are small and bad at warfare.
