Cemtralized states were harder to manage especially without modern tech. So what the state did and what it was supposed to do were very different.

Centralized states fell into deep corruption after the paranoid sociopath died. This meant that the was a large difference between the laws and the realities of daily life. This also created a system based on patronage from those with connections to the top of the communist party.

Many of the economic ideas were flawed or poorly implemented. Always focissing more on numbers and outputs rather than long term sustainablity.

There wasn't one communism and life in the Soviet Union in Stalin's times was very different than life in the Soviet Union in 1960s.

Because you lived in a totalitarian state in which any criticism of the government would get you a free vacation in a re-education facility.
Because you produced things no one really wanted to buy. Because your only option for a better life is to join the party and get an office job in which you pretend to work. Because moving out of your parents house solely depended on the will of the administration.
Because all things had to be made in the exact volume that the government ordered, and distribution systems couldn't cope, you got bread lines, fuel lines, toilet paper lines.
You had to wait years before you could get a car (of course a shitty one).
Because there's rampant corruption everywhere while very little is actually productive.
