Depends on why is the war fought and what will it lead to. Fighting a war to preserve your existence is a necessity, but shit like WW1 was literally pointless.

Depends on whose doing it. When Europeans did it, new technology arose, science and medicine advanced, and human rights and lives began to be valued as they saw the horrors of it.
