It's a combination of factors.

Meanwhile, there's the myriad Protestant denominations that appeared during and after the Second Great Awakening. Rather than a single organized group, the proliferation of denominations meant that they could all interpret scripture in their own way, leading to parishes that fit each town's religious and social attitudes. That was what allowed churches to become such vital social institutions in the first place.
Then, there are large immigrant populations in the US (especially Catholics) where their denomination played a massive role in their lives in the Old Country. It naturally became a tradition that survived the eventual Amercanization process.
