To what extent was trench warfare used in the American Civil War?
I saw earlier in a trench RP thread some guy posted a dixieball saying
"
>europe just discovering trench warfare
Lmao get with the program"
or something like that, this sparked my interest, was the American Civil War a blueprint for modern trench warfare?

Nope, earthworks were used in seiges as SOP during Napoleonic warfare. The ACW was fought mainly with linear tactics, but to a much bloodier scale.
You could make an argument that the Fraco Prussian war was using trenches as well, just look what Von Bredow was up against in his death ride.
But it would be the Russo Japanese war where trenches, bolt action rifles, machine guns, and advances in artillery forced trenches as a necessity.
