Germany would have been able to secure naval dominance in Europe as Britain would have been forced to send part of their fleet to deal with the IJN, which was one of the more advanced navies in the world at the time. They also would have been able to seize control of Siberia and caused the collapse of the Russian Empire even faster.

They'd probably end WW1 with the Far East under their control. They'd probably settle for a stalemate with Britain+France who would agree. They're not going to have much of an effect on the European theater beyond making Russia fall slightly earlier by diverting troops and giving the Germans a slightly easier time in the North Sea by drawing British assets. But the British were so dominant over the Germans in that area that short of Japan going full HAM on Britain and attacking Southeast Asia with all their effort, which they will not do, it won't affect much.

They likely would have invaded Hong Kong, IndoChina and Malaya and then entrenched and maybe made attacks on India. They likely would have fought Indian and Australian troops before Britain and France could send proper soldiers. They also would have possibly invaded parts of Siberia and hurt Russia quite a bit by making it divert forces to the east.

They could have made a contribution but their lack of armour and somewhat inferior navy would hurt them and they would be crushed when/if the US joins.

Depends, but probably quite bad in the end - they are unlikely to change the definite outcome of the war (defeat of Germany), because even though these >>2999696 >>3000209 don't provide many arguments, they are very right - IJN wouldn't have changed the naval situation by any reasonable margin and actually could have only pushed the USA faster into the war.
They probably could have seized some land in eastern Russia and Manchuria during the war, but once Germany would be done with they would be pretty much fucked - if they fought too hard, they would be punished equally afterwards, if they didn't, they would be under harsher regulations towards navy anyway, making their WW2 involvement would be even more of a joke.

It was British naval weakness in the Far East that had led to the Anglo-Japanese alliance in the first place. The Britroaches simply did not have the resources to maintain a large battlefleet in home waters and go after German cruisers in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, which is why they needed the Japs (who could concentrate all of their naval strength in Asia) to cover this deficiency.

It would have been a similar situation to 1941, except the technology of 1914, and Japan's relatively weaker position, would not have allowed them to roll up Western colonies as quickly as they did. Best bet, they manage to seize Hong Kong and Weihaiwei but get bogged down trying to take over French Indochina, they never make it as far as Malaya.

Another implication is that the AIF goes to the Pacific instead of the Middle East and Western Front, the Allies don't have the resources to pull off a Gallipoli and never contemplate it, probably a good thing in the balance.

Here are German/British naval numbersin the Far East at the outbreak of war. Add one British pre-dreadnought (HMS Triumph) and two French armored cruisers to the Allied numbers. And then add 2 dreadnoughts, 10 pre-dreads, 5 BCs, and about 20 cruisers to the Central Powers if the Japs join them.

Realistically the only hope the allies have of maintaining naval superiority in the Atlantic and Pacific if the US joins the war in 1914 and is committed entirely to the Pacific

Japan would have lost Korea and probably have been unable to take Manchuria.

One of the reasons for the rise of Communism in China is that Versailles stripped Germany of her Chinese colonies and instead of returning them to China, gave them to Japan. The Liberal faction in the Chinese government collapsed because one of their points was that siding with the "Liberal Democracies" would result in the return of Shandong from Germany. This caused Authoritarian Nationalism to become the dominant ideology in China.
