North Africa was only separated culturally from Europe with the rise of Islam.

Yes or no? Pic unrelated of course

Kinda no. Islam separated NA from eastern romanity and classical culture, but it was really the germs that separated Europe from the mediterranean basin cultural area.

Islam killed Mediterranean trade. It also made the entire place a pirates den. The Vandals were at war with Rome during their periods of raiding. It was a "defensive" action and once peace was achieved the raiding stopped. They were also massive Romanboos in all aspects bar religion. This is why they so quickly submitted to Roman rule once again.

>Inb4 Venice tho!

They escaped the worst of it because they are in the Adriatic Sea which is easier to defend from pirates . Their ships were raided just as much as others were.

Reminder that trading with Muslims got so bad that Europeans sailed across the Atlantic to avoid them.

No? If anything, the Mediterranean Sea was even busier and lucrative than it was in the ancient past due to the various Italian mercantile city states along with France, Aragon and the Byzantines. Plus pirates were always there. Did you forget how the second Punic war started?

>They escaped the worst of it because they are in the Adriatic Sea which is easier to defend from pirates . Their ships were raided just as much as others were.
And what about Genoa and those other filthy rich cities along the western coast of Italy?

>Reminder that trading with Muslims got so bad that Europeans sailed across the Atlantic to avoid them.
Which was due to the Ottomans having a chokehold on Indian trade and preventing Euros from having any shares.
>>
>>2999947
This was the historical consensus for the first part of the 20th century, but more recent archaeology has shown that the rise of Islam actually invigorated European trade by providing a connection between the Mediterranean and India/China
>>
>>2999465
Sort of. They were closely related and did share plenty of crossovers with cultures of the northern Mediterranean & Middle East (Ptolemaic Egypt, Carthage, Roman Africa, Vandals, etc.), but to argue that they were culturally homogeneous would be a massive stretch.
>>
>>2999993
I'm not saying they were homogenous. Hell, the entirety of Europe wasn't culturally homogeneous and still isn't to this day. Of course they didn't share a single culture.

It's hard to describe what I'm suggesting in the "culturally connected" sense. I'll try to put it in a different manner: European country A didn't have any preference over European country B or North African country A, and if he had to choose which one to ally with it'd be based on current political tensions and nothing like race/culture/customs.

>When Europeans traded with each other they became rich.

The Italians/Venice were rich because of their trade with Europe not because of their trade with N-Africa/muslim Levant. The majority of their trade was with Christians. The trade they did establish with muslim Kingdoms was generally short lived. Venice primarily traded with the Greeks, Balkans and the Crusaders as well as the Germans.

>Pirates existing a thousand years before is proof it always existed
No. The Romans crucified pirates, the scale of piracy between the period of Roman rule and periods after was also vastly different. You don't have entire coastal regions being devastated from piracy until the Mediterranean becomes shared.

Genoa like Venice was again another one that traded almost exclusively with Christians. The Byzantines, Jerusalem, Savoy and Spain being their largest customers. There was again limited trade with the Muslims but not on the scale or for the length of time that it existed with their Chritian trading partners.

Are the Ottomans not Muslim? Is Greece and Anatolia not in the Mediterranean?

>>2999978
Yes the Byzantines traded with the Muslims and the Italians traded with the Byzantines. The same is true for Jerusalem who traded with the Italians.

However Byzantine and Crusader trade with nations to the East is not Mediterranean trade.
>>
>>2999966
Are you serious? Piracy skyrocketed higher than it ever was. It's not binary. It's not "Are there pirates y/n"
