Say if I wanted to move to a different part of the world and get a job there (i.e. Africa, Europe, w/e), how would I go about it?
Would I just read up on a place, buy a plane ticket, and hope for the best? Because that's what it sounds like a lot of people would do.

I'm going to assume you have some skill that would make it worthwhile to hire you over some random local person. You find companies interested in hiring you, through the same channels as you would in your own country. The company will sponsor your visa, and possibly help you to arrange accommodations in your target country. Then you buy a plane ticket and move there.
If you don't have skilled labor to offer, at best you could land temporary jobs and temporary visas.
