Hey, newfag to philosophy here
Reading Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. I came across this passage that something to the extent of "If you feel like you want to do some pleasurable, instead think of how other people are being good/just or acting according to their inner daimon."
Question: I like listening to music. It's pleasurable to me. So I can't listen to music because it's pleasurable? What if creating music is someone's "gift given by nature"?

Your first mistake is assuming you most do something because Marcus Aurelius had the personal idea to do so.
Second, it doesn't mean DON'T listen to music, it means take into consideration how other people go about giving in to pleasures.

Welcome. Glad to see someone else interested in philosophy on this board who isn't just a spookposter.

another question then, kind sir;
If Marcus wrote this for himself, then there are things in there that might not apply to all of humanity but only for him. So how does one differentiate?

You don't really. It's all very universal

If the music is pleasurable to you, that is not the problem, if the music is detrimental to your work or ethic, that is a problem
There are plenty of people who find pleasure in good things, but Aurelius assumes the natural man is evil, which is not necessarily true. If you wan an example of this, look at yourself. You naturally enjoy music, something that is not inherently evil, so we can assume that the pleasure = bad basis of his argument is flawed and just because you enjoy something does not make it wrong

this thought kinda went into my mind: is it possible that when he wrote this, by "pleasures" he meant "things that you enjoy but are in conflict with your daimon"? Is there documentation of the usage of the word "pleasure" (it's Lating equivalent) that suggest a more negative meaning to the word?

I understand it as not overindulging in pleasure, which is a very relevant message in the age of internet porn and video games.
