He wasn't really right or left by modern American standards. He was the last traditional southern populist who maybe didn't hate negroes QUITE as much as his predecessors (or at least pretended not to because of overt racism's waning popularity). I think he got compared to Trump because a lot of Trumpian rhetoric made it sound like he might be making a return to this, but he really hasn't since he got elected. At any rate, he's no Bernie either.
