No, the USSR didn't want Somalia invading the new communist government in Ethiopia, so after Somalia invaded they propped up the Ethiopians and prevented them from losing.

2. Russians are mostly Eastern Orthodox, whereas Ethiopian Christians are mostly a part of what's called the Oriental Orthodox. They're entirely different communions.
