For Cromwell in Ireland, there could be no losing. There was too much at stake.

Cromwell and his men went into Ireland 'knowing' that Rome had always been, and was still in the process of persecuting Protestants.
They knew of the burning Rule of Mary Tudor. They knew about the Armada and they knew of the Catholic genocides in the Palatinate.

So, given the behaviour of Irish Catholics to Irish Protestants in 1641, what do you think would have happened to Cromwell if he had lost?

Cromwell wasn't even that brutal in his treatment of the Irish. Sure, he was brutal, but he wasn't genocidal, not by a long shot. It isn't like massacres are rare in warfare, even if they are never justified. He was a commander, and with the thirty years war only just passed, that came with a great deal of brutality by neccesity.
