The problems the US faces are very different and have to be addressed very differently. In addition, this is the sort of thing you can only truly identify in hindsight.
Notable failures for the US since emerging as a superpower are fighting against Maoist revolutions and managing what André Beaufre called the "exterior maneuvers". The US is good at political maneuvering, but once it comes to crisis management the exterior maneuvers fall apart and the interior maneuvers look like a bull in a China shop. If this trend improves, I think history will look back favorably. International political strategy has been a blight, while internally crisis management has gone pretty well all things considered.
