What went right?
Other than his death.
Literally nothing, Dev and Lemass pinched all his economic ideas without paying attention to his plan to ensure a culturally Gaelic Ireland
So now Ireland is basically an Anglo-American corporate paradise

>an Anglo-American corporate paradise
You literally can't get more right than that.

Were Dev and Lemass both bad guys? I hear Lemass did a pretty okayish job.
But also don't like how Collins is hyped up to be far more than he ever was.

Dev was a bit of a shitter but I think Lemass was generally an okay guy.
The problem is that Collins had this magnificent plan for a prosperous Ireland but they only implemented the economic policies he had come up with and left Gaelic culture, which Collins was even more passionate about, to wilt in the sun. Collins said himself that Ireland is never going to be a great economic or military power so it should be insured that they retain their unique culture.

Lemass was a good lad, he took on the economy and the economy alone and never claimed to do any more. He was also originally a member of the 12 Apostles. Probably one of the better of the statesmen Ireland got in the end.
All in all, Ireland has been starved of good statesmen. It says a lot when your man Martin fucking Mcguinness is one of the better ones in the past several decades.
