I think its common for men to be a hopeless romantic at heart and either hide behind a nihilistic facade or have difficulties reconciling their rational ideas like nihilism with things they feel and wish deeply to be true like romanticism.
I know I definitely fall into that second category. It's taken me a long time to categorize my romantic thoughts into something mostly separate from reality, but the longing for them and reality to overlap may never go away. I'm ok with that. I think men should want the world to be romantic, but realize it isn't. I think that's healthy on both an individual and a societal level. It promotes better values in both categories.

But my parents's religious views are probably worth noting if you want to understand my perspective on religion:
My father is an atheist. He dislikes all organised religion but he particularly despises the Catholic church and Islam. His father was descended from German protestants but adopted by an Irish catholic family and even fought in the IRA. None of his family are religious (but all are fervent nationalists, many of whom also fought) with the exception of his mother, who doesn't go to Mass but is one of those "it's all in God's plan" people.
My mother's family are much more religious but my mother herself isn't really. I can tell she believes on some level but keeps quiet so as not to get into arguments with my dad. Despite being much more Catholic they are much less nationalist. Her father fought for the British in WWII and he never spoke to my IRA granddad except at my parents' wedding.
I was baptised and confirmed but we never went to Mass except on Christmas/Easter/etc, and now I only go for funerals and weddings.

As for Luther: My schooling happened during the peace process, so we were taught only positive things about him as part of the government's attempts towards rapprochement with the Protestants. I can only imagine that the syllabus was more critical of him back when the church had more power here.

The short of it is that the primary negative effects of colonialism were largely cultural, but (with some notable exceptions) the colonial period significantly improved the lives of most African natives through medicine, education, infrastructure projects (mostly interrupted by WWI and most went unfinished) and agricultural practice. The largest error of decolonization, imo, was that it was very abrupt rather than gradual so when the European administrations left, there was nothing to actually keep the new states functioning semi-smoothly thus Africa not being able to get its shit together until very recently and even now it's questionable which is causing the neo-colonial efforts of France, South Korea, and China in Africa.
