The Book of Revelation is open to extremely broad interpretation so it's hard to say what's a metaphor/allegory and what's literal.

Also revelations was just an apocryphal text probably in a garbled in Greek written by an Aramaean. Churches started including it in the canon only after they realized its manipulation potential and Evangelicals want it to be true otherwise they'd have a harder time reeling in followers.
