Tengu origninated as a chinese demon. Thee first mention of them is a chinese astrologist identifying a comet as one.

Buddhist generally identified them as trouble makers who caused wars. on the other hand many swordsmen considered them messagers of the Gods and skilled warriors who sometimes imparted their skills to men. Minamoto Yoshitune was said to have been trained by the king of tengu on mount Kuruma.

Shinto thread? Shinto thread
>The first gods Kunitokotachi and Amenominakanushi summoned two divine beings into existence, the male Izanagi and the female Izanami, and charged them with creating the first land. To help them do this, Izanagi and Izanami were given a spear decorated with jewels, named Ame-no-nuboko (heavenly spear). The two deities then went to the bridge between heaven and earth, Ame-no-ukihashi ("floating bridge of heaven"), and churned the sea below with the spear. When drops of salty water fell from the spear, Onogoroshima ("self-forming island") was created. They descended from the bridge of heaven and made their home on the island.
Eventually they wished to be mated, so they built a pillar called Ame-no-mihashira ("pillar of heaven"; the mi- is an honorific prefix) and around it they built a palace called Yahiro-dono (one hiro is approximately 1.82 m, so the "eight-hiro-palace" would have been 14.56 m). Izanagi and Izanami circled the pillar in opposite directions and, when they met on the other side, Izanami spoke first in greeting. Izanagi did not think that this was proper, but they mated anyhow. They had two children, Hiruko ("leech-child") and Awashima ("faint island"), but they were born deformed and were not considered deities, but devils.
They put the children into a boat and set them out to sea, then petitioned the other gods for an answer as to what they did wrong. They were told that the male deity should have spoken first in greeting during the marriage ceremony. So Izanagi and Izanami went around the pillar again, this time Izanagi speaking first when they met, and their marriage was finally successful.
>From their union were born the ōyashima, or the "great eight islands" of the Japanese chain:
Awaji
Iyo (later Shikoku)
Ogi
Tsukushi (later Kyūshū)
Iki
Tsushima
Sado
Yamato (later Honshū)

>In Japanese beliefs, Hachiman (Hachiman-jin/Yahata no kami) is the syncretic divinity of archery and war,[1][2][3] incorporating elements from both Shinto and Buddhism.[4] >Although often called the god of war, he is more correctly defined as the tutelary god of warriors.[4][5] He is also the divine protector of Japan, the Japanese people and the Imperial House, the Minamoto clan ("Genji") and most samurai worshipped him. The name means "God of Eight Banners", referring to the eight heavenly banners that signaled the birth of the divine Emperor Ōjin. His symbolic animal and messenger is the dove.
>Since ancient times Hachiman was worshiped by peasants as the god of agriculture and by fishermen who hoped he would fill their nets with much fish. In Shinto, he became identified by legend as the Emperor Ōjin, son of Empress Jingū, from the 3rd–4th century of the Common Era.

I do love the absolutely enormous catalog of monsters and spirits Japan has. It reminds me of Germanic mythology with all the Orcs, Trolls, Draugr/Revenants/Wights, Dragons, Wolves, Giants, Dwarves, Elves, etc.

Oni are an adoption from the Indian Rakshasas.

And Tengu were originally a Chinese canine demon.

FLOWER PRINCESS AND ROCK PRINCESS
Okuninushi, the god of the land, decided to give his land to the highest goddess, Amaterasu who sent the minor god Hononinigi to reign the land. Hononinigi fell in love with the flower princess, Konohanano-Sakuya-Hime and had asked her father, Oyamatsumi (another minor god), for their marriage. Oyamatsumi asked Hononinigi to marry both Konohana and her sister Iwanaga-Hime (the rock princess), yet Hononinigi didn't want Iwanaga because she was very ugly. Iwanaga was then sent back to her father. Oyamatsumi told Hononinigi that, "I sent my two daughters to you because Konohana would bring you prosperity and Iwanaga would have brought you eternal life but you rejected Iwanaga. You and your descendants lost the chance to live forever. This is why gods and emperors die on our land."

More on Sakuya if you care enough:
Konohanasakuya-hime or Konohananosakuya-hime "[cherry] tree blossom blooming princess" (her name also appears in a shorter form as "Sakuya-bime")), in Japanese mythology, is the blossom-princess and symbol of delicate earthly life. She is the daughter of the mountain god Ohoyamatsumi.[2] She is often considered an avatar of Japanese life, especially since her symbol is the sakura (cherry blossom). Konohanasakuya-hime is also the goddess of Mount Fuji and all volcanoes.
Sakuya-bime is the wife of the god Ninigi. She met him on the seashore and they fell in love; Ninigi asked Oho-Yama, the father of Sakuya-bime for her hand in marriage. Oho-Yama proposed his older daughter, Iwa-Naga-hime, instead, but Ninigi had his heart set on Sakuya-bime. Oho-Yama reluctantly agreed and Ninigi and Ko-no-hana married. Because Ninigi refused Iwa-Naga, the rock-princess, human lives are said to be short and fleeting, like the sakura blossoms, instead of enduring and long lasting, like stones.
Sakuya-hime became pregnant in just one night, causing suspicion in Ninigi. He wondered if this was the child of another kami. Sakuya-bime was enraged at Ninigi's accusation and entered a doorless hut, which she then set fire to, declaring that the child would not be hurt if it were truly the offspring of Ninigi. Inside the hut, Ko-no-hana had three sons, Hoderi, Hosuseri and Hoori.[3][4]

>Shrines have been built on Mount Fuji for Sakuya-bime. It is believed that she will keep Mount Fuji from erupting,[5] but shrines to her at Kirishima have been repeatedly destroyed by volcanic eruptions. She is also known for having torn up the Yatsugatake Mountains, because it was higher than Fuji-san.

That's animism for you. When everything has a life force behind it, you get a gorrilion little gods and spirits. European pagan folk religions were like that as well pre-christianity, what with the Greco-Roman ancestor reverence and nymphs and river gods and all.
