It's a mountainous area so the people there were split up into various distinct tribes. They never merged together and so today you have a variety of ethnic groups occupying a small space.

Said small space is also geographically vital for Russia to control. This causes conflict.

It's a crossroads of empires, countless invading peoples have come thru there, often leaving their legacy in their languages. This coupled with the areas extreme mountainosity makes a haven for languages that have died out elsewhere.

More isolated, less attractive for political propaganda as Russia's attack on an orthodox nation or Armenia closeness to Iran does not makes sense on the worldviews of """westerns""".

The amount of native ethnicities and the remnants of many nations that crossed the Caucasus makes it a clusterfuck.

Most of Europe is more involved in the Balkans then the Caucasus.

Yes since most of the people in the balkans have some sort of state or even multiple states but only about 4 of the Caucasian peoples have a state

The groups inhabiting it are really different, you have orthodox Christian Georgians who are a European ethnicity, Armenians who are apostolic Christian and a completely distinct ethnicity and Shia Muslim Azeris who are a Turkic-Persian people. There's also tonnes of other groups around like Chechens, Lezgins, Russians. It's amazingly diverse and different despite not occupying a great deal of land.
