First of all, they weren't arch rivals, or rivals at all. Tesla used to work for Edison and left on bad terms because he didn't think he was getting enough credit for his work. After that they had nothing to do with each other, and never directly competed.

Secondly, both men are completely mischaracterized in the memes. Edison was a brilliant man who sought to elevate civilization, just like Tesla. And Tesla was ambitious guy who wanted to get rich, just like Edison. Edison succeeded where Tesla failed not because he "stole" ideas and murdered defenseless elephants, but because he had a genius for managing a team and developing practical products. Tesla was an autist who couldn't work with anyone and overestimated his own abilities. Tesla's work was NOT shut down because it threatened the rich. He was funded directly by J.P. Morgan himself for many years, and he was eventually cut off because he failed to deliver on his many promises and prove that his shit actually worked.
