Linguistic student here. Read the shit out of intro to linguistic type of book. Then get ``syntax Genarative introduction`` by andrew carnie. Also learn english IPA. Get few books about intro to phonology,intro to morphology and intro to semantics. If you are going to good university they will teach these stuff anyway. After you learned enough of terms(there are a lot) you can start reading Chomsky`s and his student`s papers.

Getting a job in lingustic field you must be really really good at it. Also learning another language will help.

Depends how good you are really. This field depends on self improvement a lot.
If you are not good at linguistics you will end up as translator or English teacher. Thou translating is quite taxing job so care.

i'm a linguist from russia and i cannot emphasize this enough: do not neglect foreign scientific traditions. i am far from being a patriot of any kind but it seems dumb that linguists from us and western europe (to MUCH lesser extent) usually know nothing about sergei starostin, vyachaslav ivanov, tamaz gamkrelidze, zaliznyak and the likes
it almost looks "towny" so to speak not being familiar with the answers that have already been given to the questions you ask yourself
lingvomofos from france, germany, the netherlands (not to mention czechs and the whole eastern europe) tend to appreciate russian linguistics when they come to learn about it
until fairly recently western linguistics had been fetishizing chomskian universal grammar and laryngeals while there is plenty of legitimate criticism of that stuff in languages other than english
also the nostratic theory, man! let's develop that shit while still being as critical of it as we can

ok, i'm really not an authentic linguist by any means since i had to drop off due to financial issues

also, it's a cultural thing to some extent - they call you a linguist in russia since the time you come to major in linguistics, and i still read about linguistics every day, i also use my knowledge to translate stuff, and understanding a thing or two about etymology really helps
i'm sorry for misleading you but it doesn't make my point any less relevant
but i guess you become a linguist by staying in the science after you finish university, doing research, writing papers and teaching students

i work on the telly
my background helps to some extent, but that wouldn't necessarily be the case in other situations however similar
since the soviet times the percent of people with higher education in russia is pretty close to 100% (coz it's often free and almost always prestigious), but the economy is shit and people are not well-paid generally, high-paying jobs are acquired through connections, not merit. and philological faculties (linguistics is seen as a part of philology here) are famous for being a factory for producing mcdonald's workers
however, i tend to fap on people doing interesting stuff, and not what others consider to be "useful"
i don't regret diving into linguistics a bit, i regret people not seeing linguistics and philology as part and parcel of being an authentic human being, since everything is, you know, language
