I have to write a paper on a historical figure for one of my classes, I'm thinking of doing Moses; this isn't a religious class and I consider myself atheist, more details on that matter are irrelevant.

To get straight to the point my question is: How exactly did he lead the hebrews out of Egypt/slavery if that even happened? Did he exist? Is this question inherently wrong?

I know this isn't the place to go for reliable information but I know I can get a fairly quick answer here. If you have sources please site them if you want; I just need a start on where to look or if I should choose a different subject.

I probably won't be able to reply in the next few hours but I'll check back when I can. Thanks in advance.

None of Exodus can be verified.

Not even "a place called Egypt existed?"

We don't even know what race these "Egyptians" belonged to

there's a lack of archeological evidence for enough settlements (even traces of wandering pastoralists) in the areas that the 40 years of wandering occurred from what i've heard. i forget where i saw this but I think it was in Ancient Israel by Lester L. Grabbe, been awhile since i read it. dating based soley on the biblical text will get you 1400s BC about the same time akhenaten ruled egypt leading to speculation that the Moses story has a historical core from a group of monotheists being cast out of Egypt. there's one kinda corroborating source from a hellenistic period egyptian historian Manetho but it's disputed: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osarseph

personally i don't think there is a historical core to the story

i always thought they were just a desert tribe that linked their past with egyptians to give their otherwise unknown history some flare, like how muslims came out of the desert and were like "we got the torah 3.0 now lol we wuz gods people n shiet"

Maybe you should ask what the motive of the Pentateuch is instead?

my theory is that it was created in response to the babylonian exile, showing their ancestors going through a similar circumstance to their own and tying into the anti-egypt polemics in deuteronomy and jeremiah from judah becoming an egyptian vassal after Josiah's death. 1st chronicles has a few passages (in particular the one on Ephraim in chapter 7) which imply that the Israelites stayed in canaan rather than leaving to egypt in the first place

You might find the documentary 'patterns of evidence: exodus' interesting, its on netflix if im right. It discusses a lot of circumstantial evidence related to the exodus and they mention multiple researchers and books. Just dont rely on their conclusions to heavily and draw your own.

>dont rely on their conclusions
That's an understatement. That documentary is basically just Fundie propaganda that's trying to hide it's obvious message behind a veneer is science. It has as much credibility as The Exodus Decoded, and shouldn't be recommended at all if OP actually wants to learn about scholarship of the Exodus.

Thats true and i wont deny that but it might still be interesting. Also, a couple of legit researchers and archeologists have their say so combined together you get both views despite the christian side gets more screentime. I think OP is smart enough to not accept every claim as undeniable truth. Therefore i recommanded it.

The historicity of Moses could make a very interesting paper.

Look at these three articles:
