Does anyone here actually have a job/advanced degrees in the field of History? If so what do you do? What period/subject do you study? How did you get your job?

Is it a field worth investing time and money into?

>Does anyone here actually have a job/advanced degrees in the field of History?
I have a second level degree (MA equivalent).
>If so what do you do?
I work for a local government agency that tends to local monuments and sites of historical significance. It's mostly renaissance and early modern villas and some castles and private churches, but we collaborate a lot with universities and other organizations to publish material on local history for divulgation and tourism promotion. The villas have shitloads of artistic and archival content within, so there's a lot of research going on.
What period/subject do you study?
Local history basically. I personally focus mostly on the renaissance and early modern period, but I have to deal with roman and pre-roman stuff pretty regularly.
>How did you get your job?
Public contest open to everyone qualified in history/archeology/art history and preservation.

>Is it a field worth investing time and money into?
No. I get paid peanuts and barely 10% of my class got history related jobs after graduation. I got particularly lucky in getting a job locally (relatively lucky, I managed it because I focused on local history), everyone else had to move to other cities or abroad to find a job.
You should study history because you like it more than any other subject and more than making bank. If you don't, look elsewhere.

Cool, are you in Britain?

What kind of public contest was involved in getting that job?

>Cool, are you in Britain?
No.
>What kind of public contest was involved in getting that job?
The kind where they put up a contest notice, youmail them your cv and academic records (they give you points for specific foci, I know my thesis on local history let me climb up a few spots on the ranking) to sign up, and then you and everyone else takes a written examination (essay questions). If you pass that, you get an interview too. Done that, they weight up your results and cv, the guy(s) with the highest total wins the job(s).
It's a pretty old fashioned type of selection, but hey it's public service, what did you expect?

History BA. Local government accountant. Not CPA only due to credits but I manage CPAs.

Seriously considering running for Mayor when the current one retires.

Never heard of something like that (I'm an American). What country are you in?

Hope you didn't have to pay back any student loans with no degree to show for it.

Good to know I made the right decision.

I have a master's degree in history from a top 5 university. I specialised in international relations, combined with studies in German and French, so I could apply for diplomatic / foreign policy consultancy jobs.

At the moment I'm working as an intern at my national embassy. Don't believe the hpy, you can study history and still get great jobs (as long as you specialise in the rights subjects).
>>
>>2906881
History degrees are not the same in every country. At my old uni, international relationships is its own degree, and history specialization are strictly period and geographic area based.
Not to mention that getting a diplomacy related job is hard as fucking shit here and it mandates further study once you pass selection even for the entry level positions.

>Not to mention that getting a diplomacy related job is hard as fucking shit

Fucking tell me about it. Even with this degree, I nearly had to suck cock just to get an internship.

And surely you can specialise in certain ways: e.g. the topic of your dissertation, chosen subjects, specific areas e.g. history of modern Middle East), etc etc

I failed first year of English, but I actually passed the history classes.

For the most part, there's no real acknowledgement of specialization outside of the stated subject of your degree in the job market. Sure, people looking for a specific type of history graduate will look at your specialization, but that's it.
In my country I simply cannot apply to diplomatic jobs with my history degree. I need a master's degree in either political sciences, economy or law to apply, it's a basic requirement.

Not history related but I have an archaeology degree. Thankfully where I live there are a lot of ongoing sites and finding a job isn't horribly difficult. Many people become 'shovel bums' and travel the country going to different sites.

Also many archaeology jobs are only offered during the spring/summer with fall/winter being used for lab work to study whatever you find.

I live comfortably. I don't make a whole lot of money but enough to live and be happy with the job I have.

I have a degree in Architecture and work doing so. I just have a history hobby.

No CPA? Is government accounting that relaxed? Your career in private would stop at associate without a certification.
