that's just something ancient people did, probably as a way of signifying power.

There's no point at which christards start accepting that their book is fiction, is there. Must come up with some stupid rationalisation for everything.

Only dumb burgers take the OT literally.

It's written by man, between hundreds and thousands of years after the fact. Hence why there is little evidence for certain characters like Moses and the like. They're cultural heroes rather than concrete individuals who existed exactly as portrayed in the bible.

It's only in the NT that things get a little more literal as it was documented closer to the time. Although obviously contradictions will still exist as it is a collection of various humans documenting their experience with the divine.

Biblical literalism is a cancer.

Because the demiurge had to be mocked, he said that they would die after eating the fruit, so they lived long.

A "year" is actually full moon to full moon.

950 "years" if retranslated to "months" is just over 79 years old.

Nah Enoch was meant to be read literal.

truth is, none of the jew gematria bullshit in the bible matters. that stuff was added in later to make it seem more jewish. those weirdos are obsessed with numbers and shit. doesn't mean a damn thing and you could eliminate all of that horeshit from the bible and not change a thing.

Yeah. He never died. It specifically doesn't use the word died dude. The others it says died. Hell it even says Adam died.

I don't see the issue here, but let's try a different case:

>9 And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan:

>10 And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters:

>11 And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.

90/12 = 7.5 years old when his son was born

Judaism has heavily influenced by Mesopotamian religion, both because it /probably/ descended from one, and during the Babylonian Captivity. If you'll look at the Sumerian king's list, you'll note some had reigns lasting for 'thousands of years'. Thing is, these numbers had symbolic resonance.

So either people back then lived for a lot longer, or the numbers were shorthand for implying something about the kings themselves. Sort of like how 7 times 7 generations does't actually mean '49 generations' in the bible, but is shorthand for 'forever'.
>>
>>2901982
Which version do you read? The Septuagint has Enos at 190 years. Which would make him just under 16.

And anyway, in 1939 a girl in Peru had a kid at 5. Hell the virgin mary in the bible is 12-14.

Honestly you're over thinking this. Could be an adoption thing. Like that's when they became a patriarch. The book highlights 10 pre-deluge patriarchs. A patriarch was a man who exercised autocratic authority as a pater familias over an extended family.
>>
>>2901687
What else is symbolic and shouldn't be taken literally? Eden? Tower of Babel? The Flood? Miracles of Jesus? Genesis?
>>
>>2901663
The age-related consequences of sin were not as severe as they were after the Flood.
>>
>>2901663
Because they were too poor to live for thousands of years like those Babylonian God-kings.
>>
Evidence of the dinosaur era. More oxygen means bigger craters that live longer. Like nephalim and prophets etc. Abraham, methusula and Noah were all like 8ft tall.

Genesis and some other books (such as Jonah) are symbolic.
The Bible is a set of books with different genres written in different eras, by different people to a different public.

Firstly, I'm not a Christian.

Secondly, years being a "perfect way of measuring time" means nothing to humans thousands of years ago. You do know that calenders change right? The way humans have measured time and what constitutes a year has changed several times.
>>
>>2901663
Times were harder back then, which causes a demand for faith

>Could be an adoption thing. Like that's when they became a patriarch.
so he became a patriarch at 7 years old or adopted a child at 7 years old. yes now it makes perfect sense
>>
>>2901663
it says right in genesis, at the beginning of chapter six: "My breath shall not abide in the human forever, for he is but flesh. Let his days be numbered one hundred and twenty years" (Gen 6:3)

so 120 is the age you live to if you live "perfectly"... which also happens to be right around the age of the oldest living humans we have on modern record.. coincidence?

and yes, the ages in genesis are literal years, the same 365 days we use. it's their concept of "day" ("yom") that is different.. i.e. God created the heavens and earth in one "day"... day means age or era or epoch--an indeterminate length of time specifying some continuity

back to the age thing.. what keeps humans living longer? telomere length on the ends of our DNA. it's simple for God to shorten or extend these telomeres by a few nucleotide bases. so yeah, it's all true

so repent you turbo faggits heathens. or don't, idc

god bless

>years are the perfect way of measuring time

According to fucking who? How? What are you basin this on? You do know that years last different times in different planets, right?
>>
>>2902903
Why the fuck would he need to do that if he is omniscient.
>>
>>2902941
He can do whatever he wants, why do you do the things you do?

How can anyone take Genesis as literal? I mean, you can at best assume that kings and judges had record-keepers and scribes writing down events that could be used down the line to create some of the books like Judges and Samuel and Kings.

But, who the fuck was writing anything down when God created light and separated the waters from the land? No Christian or Jew claims God literally wrote this shit down, they just say it was God inspired. So who wrote any of this down and how would it have been accurate if it was 900 years after the fact?

I've heard Moses is one of the ones claimed to be the author of the Pentateuch, but even then there's nothing in there that says Moses was inspired to write this stuff down.
>>
It makes sense that God made the first generations live longer to let them more time to populate the planet
>>
>>2902941
Think of Adam and Eve as a beta release. Once Noah was reached, humanity was, as expected, pretty shit. It would make sense to shorten lifespans after proving that people only need that long to either become a permanent fuckup or not.
