We've had this thread 8 million times already.
The US never even invaded North Vietnam. They signed a cease fire and held off invading South Vietnam until they were sure the US wouldn't join the fight again.

Threat of Escalation.
Basically: if the USA invaded North Vietnam, China and USSR will turn the place into Korea 2.0.

The tunnels gave the Viet Cong a pretty large tactical advantage. In Cu Chi and the Iron Triangle they had literally miles of tunnels, and it took the US an embarrassingly long time to realize they'd built a major base directly on top of them.
Pic related they were ridiculous
They actually had very good leadership and people who were willing to die for their freedom.
Vietnam has a very strong independence culture rooted in what basically is 2 thousand years of conflict with china.
Meh, if the US went full attrition, they would have won eventually.
There just wasn't the drive to fight

What about France in 1946-54 same thing?

But didn't China back up the North Vietnamese because they were also Communists?

Yes, China backed Vietnam. They didn't want an American vassal on their doorstep. They fought a small border conflict with the Vietnamese a few years after Vietnam was fully communist though.
The Vietnamese and Chinese just didn't like each other. Chinese relations with Vietnam got worse, but by the 1980s America actually had formed a decent relationship with them since the US was no longer interested in invading.

No, the French just flat-out lost in the field.

For the same reason the Japanese held out until the nukes.
Totalitarian nations do not surrender.
Also, pretty much everyone was onboard with "drive out the foreign occupiers" as a reason to do to war.
