Iosif had an epiphany after a traumatic battle with the Germans. He becomes a devout priest again, spends 20 years in the Gulag but ultimately survives the brutal and remains unbent in spirit and faith.

Meanwhile Adolf goes trough the hell of the Eastern Front, by luck, his defiant refusal to die and his ability to be cold as ice he survives and rises trough the ranks. He ends up what he always wanted to be, a highly decorated and respected Officer, a proud man.

By pure chance the two meet each others again, during a holiday in Poland Adolf in his car comes about POW work detachment and recognizes his old friend. He tries to save Iosef, but ultimately cant and is confronted with the horror of the camps, the Nazi war machine and the inevitable fate of his friend. Iosif forgives him and blesses him, but Adolf can't find peace no more and is broken by this.
