It's basically fanfiction of the Bible that thinks the Old Testament was way better, but didn't go far enough.

Although by that logic, Christianity is a knock-off whose only connection to the Old Testament is that it's supposedly the same God as before, with completely new characters and characterizations.

So yeah, it is a knock-off, but it's not as if it started the trend. There are a hell of a lot more legit reasons to critique Islam than that.

Some Christians looked at it as another heresy from the desert when they first encountered it, and Muhammad likely did hang around with heretical Christians during his days as a merchant, but I don't think that you could ever definitively show that Muhammad was deliberately plagiarising. He apparently believed what he was saying.

Islam doesn't fit in with the Abrahamic faiths at all. First off they use an edited version of the Old Testament which already sets them at odds with Christians and Jews who although they disagree about its interpretation, still both use the same text. Secondly Muhammad suddenly makes Mecca the city of primary importance while both Christians and Jews believe that it is Jerusalem. Not even Jews are as autistic about the Temple as Muslims are about the Kaaba where you're required to pray towards it five times a day because it houses a magic rock. The whole "black stone" meteorite veneration is just embarrassing and frankly this alone is enough to disqualify them from being considered Abrahamics.

to be fair, it did unify the various tribes under one religious and political banner, but more than anything else it legitimised the worst of thier behavior as a culture.

It's an Arab-centric version of the Old and New Testament sprinkled with some Arabian adventures. I mean the dude says Arabs are the descendants of Ishmael therefore deserve all the holy land and shit and that Abraham built the pagan cube in Mecca that was really created by Arabian polytheists. Also his "stoning the devil" and all that was also previously pagan practices.

Muhammad traveled a lot. He saw Jews, Zoroastrians, orthodox Christians, Nestorian Christians, gnostic Christians. He figured out if these guys can make their own fan fix based on the Abrahamic universe, then so can I.

Muslims do exactly what Pagan polytheists did before Islam IE running around the Kaaba. Christians do none of these pagan practices.
