Well it turns out when someone's threatened with a brutal agonizing death, they tend to be a bit more averse to messing with you.

That and impaling wasn't that much out of the ordinary for the time in that region. The Ottomans used impalement as a means of execution meant to make an example of the victim - off the top of my head, there was the captain of a Venetian boat that tried to run the straits at Gallipoli right after Rumelian Castle was finished that was impaled to scare off blockade runners.

For Wallachia, being on the forefront of Ottoman aggression, the massed impalements were a great way to demoralize an invading foe and deter the all-too-common raiding parties that the Ottomans sponsored against neighbors.
