were they pro-Luther, because fu*k the catholic church
what was their view on them
>>2846795
I'm not Orthodox myself but I'm fairly confident that they support Luther on things he said that can only apply to Rome specifically but reject the things that could be applied to their church. For example an Orthodox would probably agree with Luther that the Vatican is corrupt but there is no way they would have a positive view of Sola Scriptura or Sola Fide.

Orthodox isn't Sola Scriptura?
>>2846859
No, they believe in (((holy tradition))) aka enshrined cultural practices that have nothing to do with Jesus. The thing you always have to remember with Orthodox churches is that they are basically ethnic clubs so they're designed to preserve their cultural practices within their dogma.

so what was the main reason they broke from the Catholic Church
>>2846930
We hate the pope.
That's it.
The Pope was being shit in the 11th century (look up Saeculum Obscurum, the period was literally called pornocracy because the Vatican was THAT corrupt), got into a spat with the Byzantine Emperor and the Ecumenical Patriarch over who should be top dog in the Church.
Both sides excommunicated each other.
The real hate came after the 4th Crusade wrecked the Byzantines and tried to impose Latin rule on Constantinople. Prior to that it's possible the Schism could have been healed; after - too much hate.

This, basically. I remember reading they were very interested early on and there was correspondence but after they realized Luther strayed way too much for their taste from tradition they politely declined further cooperation.
Really, it was a "we'll agree to disagree. Leave us in peace and go mess with the Pope."
>>2846930
Officially, it was because of a disagreement about the procession of the Holy Spirit which has become known as the "filioque controversy."
However I think if you read between the lines you can see that the split was really about Constantinople wanting to end Rome's Latin influence over their Greek culture.

This always bugs me, why are so many protestants think it was only the catholic church has had all those things they hate?
>>2846970
I think it's because there is very little Orthodox influence in Protestant countries so they're really only familiar with Roman Catholicism.
>>2846913
>sucks dick of (((jewish))) scripture
>puts kike parentheses around tradition instead of sola scriputra
kys
>>2846859
Are you really this retarded? Did you REALLY think orthodoxy is sola scriptura? I'm shocked at this level of idiocy on /his/.
>>2846978
This, basically. I grew up Missouri Synod Lutheran and am marrying a Methodist, and there are many Protestants who just have no clue what the eastern churches are.
>>2846795
There is an Orthodox council condemning Calvinism
