WW2 was the single greatest victory of the soviet union, won with an unspeakable amount of suffering. Looking back it was their only unambiguously successful endeavor. Let them have their name, more than enough people died for it.

It's difficult to overstate how present WW2 still is in the russian historical consciousness. It is kind of heartrending when you think about it, they are still so proud of this (very real and indeed impressive) victory that over 70 years on you still have tons of people driving around with stickers of "the great patriotic war" on their cars, and yet everyone else just seems to have moved on. it's like the old veteran who is the only one who still comes to the memorial sitting alone on a bench with all of those meaningless medals on his uniform jacket. even the germans whose national consciousness today is deeply intertwined with ww2 and the nazi past don't care as much about the war any more. i think it's deeply humiliating for many russians to see how comfortably their enemies, the ones who they supposedly defeated, can live now in comparison with them. it's one of the reasons why the first thing an average russian will say when they meet a german is "we won".
