If they lost the invasion and the Germans were succesfull, the death toll on the allied side would have to be insane, and since these are liberal democracies, not authoritarian shit holes, there'd be reason to believe the allies wouldn't try another mass invasion like that again, for public opinion purposes.

we were already in southern Italy during D-Day. So we would have just diverted more to Italy and pushed up north through the Alps until the Germans diverted men away from France. Then landed somewhere else in france. southern end of the western coast maybe.

Not him, but that wasn't really possible. Italy is geographically tiny, and both sides hit about the limit of what could effectively fight in the theater around November of 1943. Trying to pack more troops in there would be like WW1 all over again, with long, deep lines and no advance because there's just nowhere to funnel your firepower.

The Western Allies needed more space, which is what Normandy and Dragoon were all about.
