Why did the Russian Revolution happen?
Was the Tsar exceptionally cruel compared to other rulers, or were there other factors?

Carefully orchestrated move by the Germans to get Russia out of the war
Of course, the Germans lost, so they never got the chance to contain the Commies as they planned after the war.
Anyway, average russian was sick of the war, constant losses on battles, and their general's and officer's complete disregard for their soldier's lives. There was huge food shortages, cause all men were sent to the front and no one was left to care for crops. Commies offered a way out of war and bread for everyone, so of course the average gullible russian peasant took the bait.

Also the revolution had been a long time coming, tensions had been building since the 1890's and there were a couple failed revolutions before WWI

-years of repression
-years of persecution of media, opposing politicians, reformists, intellectuals
-losing to an inferior race during the Japanese war, which led to the revolution of 1905 - But the established Duma still didn't have political power and quickly became the puppet of the Tsar
-war fatigue and forced military service
-widespread scarcity and famine
-inept governance
-scandals e.g. Rasputin
-violent repression of strikes and protests for bread
-subversive actions by communists supported by Germany to destabilize Russia
-Military humiliations

> itt people who don't know the difference between the February Revolution and the October coup, thinking the Russian Revolution is a singular thing

Daily reminder the February revolution was a genuine grass-root uprising against the hated regime and the October coup was a small group of people overthrowing the legitimate government and imposing itself on the country. You can talk about the deep reasons and long lasting developments leading to the first, like >>2839494, but there were not inherent reasons for the second except for Lenin deciding it's time for the party to take the power, with some German gold might or might not have been involved.

Prove any of this wrong, m8. You can read about how happy everybody was on the day Nicolas abdicated, the high military command and the Russian Orthodox Church including, monarchism had become popular only by the latter stages of the Civil War and especially among the white emigrants in the 1920s. Next, the provisional government was the closest thing to a legitimate government Russia had at the time, recognized as such both internally and externally, this is not even a question.

>thinks that the Soviet movement initially wasn't a grass-roots movement

No shit
>>
>>2839643
Not enough to justify the coup.
>>2839651
Well, they weren't the only one, I used them as examples of extremely conservative powers being totally Ok with the abdication.

If the tsar was "exceptionally cruel" the revolution wouldn't happen. He was actually weak and indecisive, and he let the liberal opposition grow unopposed. It was the liberal opposition that deposed the tsar, the commies then deposed the liberals, who were incompetent and had no social basis at larger society.

It often happens during a revolution that a small political group uses the chaotic context in order to seize power. Cfr. The Iranian revolution in 1979

>Was the Tsar exceptionally cruel compared to other rulers,

He was. Most Russian peasants were living no better than they had been 800 years ago and there were frequent famines.

>what was the Duma
>what was the Kadet party
>what were the Octobrists
>what were the zemstvos and the Zemgor

If Nicky wasn't cucked, if he was strong like his father and killed them all, there would be no revolution. There is no revolution against strong tyrants like Alexander III or Louis XIV, only against their weak successors like Nicholas II and Louis XVI.

>>2839559
The Provisional Government tried, but they didn't get out of the war, so they lost a lot of support. Not everyone wanted the reds, but they held the industrial areas, so they won
