he's the single biggest reason France was treated leniently after the napoleonic wars and wasn't put into a post-WW1 germany situation, he's a Varys type character looking out for what's best for France even if it means doing some shady shit. Some say he "betrayed the revolution" but his actions allowed further revolutions to happen without outside influence, ultimately allowing for republics to form via his insistence on peace and nonintervention in europe. If your a napoleon fan it's understandable to feel like he undermined a great man, but he made sure napoleon's mistakes didn't cripple the future of France.
