So, I've been curious for a while now about the bad parts of our history (in our books we seem to always be an innocent victim everyone was afraid of so I assume the authors tend to forget to mention some things)... At first I was planning on reading up on it from the books of a neighbouring country sometime in the future but I probably won't have the time in the next ~2 years and I'm really fucking curious. I know it's a small country so I doubt many people have cared to read up on it, but if someone has, could you please give me some leads on times we were doing stupid shit?

Varna would've been the cradle of civilization if horse archers didn't fuck it up: fact.
>>
>>2827601
you came out of nowhere and started to fuck things up like the rest of the slavs.

But dont worry, every nation in the world has been like that at some point in the history

Germany is doing it every 50 years

I mean, Bulgaria is certainly bad at picking sides in wars.

I have one that always triggers Bulgarians: The "unification" of Bulgaria and Rumelia.

Bulgaria and Rumelia were both Ottoman vassals. They both had peace deals with the Ottoman empire following the latest Russo-Turkish war.
Bulgaria one day decided to draft half its manpower and walk into Rumelia. The rumelian police obviously couldn't stop them, there was little fighting.
Bulgaria declared that it now owns Rumelia, even though they are both Ottoman vassals.

Internationally, the Ottomans asked what to do, since they were in a weak position after the defeat to the Russians, and didn't want to act without permission.
Britain, Germany and France said they will support the Ottomans against Russia, since Bulgaria was assumed to be acting under Russian orders. Russia had to withdraw faced with that coalition. Russian military generals, administrators, engineers, advisors were told to retire and leave Bulgaria to return to Russia.
Austria then backed Serbian desire for compensation - Serbia had ambitions to be the dominant state, and Bulgaria had just doubled its land and population. Additionally, the same way that Bulgaria was a Russian project, that Russia hoped to grow and swallow later, Serbia was an Austrian project for the same reasons.Serbia invaded Bulgaria.

The Serbian-Bulgarian war was one of the Austrian model of shoot-reload-shoot, and the Russian model of shoot-charge-scream. The Bulgarians won, much of the fighting being loud hand to hand butchery with accompanying music. Allegedly the Serbian forces learned to run away from the sound of the music approaching.
Austria disliked the outcome, and announced that it will join the war if Bulgaria advanced further into Serbia than they already had.

Peace was made, unification achieved. The price: alienating Serbia and Russia, destroying "slavic brotherhood", humiliating the Ottomans further, and more importantly, making room for the Russian loyalist coup that removed the king Russians disliked, and the counter-coup, and the drift of Bulgaria towards Germany as Russia abandoned her. Thats how they came to >>2827657

Curiously, the Ottoman Empire was technically in war with Serbia. Serbia had just attacked her vassal, so the Ottomans had to do something. They sent 2 divisions of drafted soldiers, without guns or food, via the train. The locals in the Bulgarian capital took care of them and set them up to live in a camp, and they never saw fighting. They later returned after the war to a hero's welcome.

The absolute hilariousness of that war amazes me.
Especially the point where the Serbs donated their medical supplies to treat the wounded Bulgarians.
And the "i'll capture sofia and demand money to leave" approach of Milan. Milan in general.

Fun fact: Surrender and betrayal are the same word in bulgarian.

Here in Macedonia you are the evil fascist occupier :') But i know the truth don't worry

>They're bigger flippers than Italy.

How? They were neutral in both world wars and picked the wrong side, they lost, the only time they "flipped" was when the communists OVERTHREW the government and pledged allegiance to the Soviet Union and the allies. But at this time the war was over.

Possible stupid question:
Do modern Slavic Bulgarian really identity with the Turkic (or Scytian-Sumerian?) Bulgars of the early Middle Ages? Knowing that they were only a small part of the population and most modern Bulgarians may not have any connection to those one.
Seen from another country this seem dubious at best. More like a myth to make the country seem older.

What were original Bulgarians called before Bulgars came to those lands?

That sounds quite marvelous desu. Would love to be part of that Army.

>Do modern Slavic Bulgarian really identity with the Turkic (or Scytian-Sumerian?) Bulgars of the early Middle Ages? Knowing that they were only a small part of the population and most modern Bulgarians may not have any connection to those one.

The Bulgarians are a slavic people, the Bulgars are the people that created the state of Bulgaria and gave it its name, there is nothing the Bulgarians can identify with other than Bulgarians. The Bulgars unified the slavs into a state, the state was called Bulgaria and the inhabitants Bulgarian, its that simple.

>What were original Bulgarians called before Bulgars came to those lands?

They were the original Bulgarians, before that they were Slavic tribes, with different names, before that Romei, and before that Thracians e.t.c. There is no Bulgaria before the Bulgars, the same way there is no France without the Franks.

The historians certainly do, as do a few pagan larpers.
For 99% of the people they are "proto-bulgarians", a part of the bulgarian mix, which was added to slavs, greeks, thracians, whoever else lived here.
Proto-bulgarians is the official term used, though historians are pushing that we should just call them bulgarians.

These guys are the best candidate for who the bulgarian people were before Bulgaria.
