While /his/ is by no means at the will of academia, I'd still argue this board has more substance to it than a good 80% of 4chan and I, as well as plenty others I'm sure, have learned a few tidbits that I didn't otherwise. You just have to be able to filter out the /pol/ and actually spend time watching and interacting with worth while threads
