As to detente, that had some benefits, but most of it was symbolic. For example, the SALT Treaty didn't do a lot to decrease the chances of nuclear war, but it made him look good. But Vietnam alone condemns him to be the worst.

Anyone who didn't say Andrew Johnson is wrong
>>
>>2825899
Uhh, yeah. I would say Harding but he died from food poisoning when on vacation to get away from his administration's scandals. Harding's failures kind of got smeared around in the years leading up to 1929.

Shrub had a full two terms to do everything wrong. HE OK'ed shutting down California. was gearing up for a war on porn when he had been warned about Al-Qaeda. Can't really really blame him for not wanting to stop easy money after the Y2K fizzle.

Yeah, the Y2K fizzle. The crisis itself had been averted but now everyone had enough stockpiles that they stopped spending causing the downturn. Lower the interest rates to keep things running and discover that parties are great.

I guess it was legal to use monopoly powers to triple natural gas prices at the California border. Enron did eventually get caught when they hid the fact that they didn't know how to invest truckloads of money very well.

Didn't want these feels. It's all coming back to me. I'm going to re-read how Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Roger W. Ferguson, Jr saved America on 9-11. Then I'm going to find a high resolution picture of Gashcroft.

No, even most professional presidential historians rank him pretty low, often within range of the lower ten

He botched Afghanistan, he lied the country into war with Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 and whom it is proven that he had plans on invading well before he was even elected president. He then botched that country's reconstruction.

Not to mention completely botching the Katrina response, and even Alan Greenspan admitting that the 2008 Financial catastrophe was born out of this naive belief that markets regulate themselves, something Dubya embraced his entire career.

Two wars, a massive tax cut, and a medicaid expansion, all paid with the country's credit card. And then when Barack Obama went to pay off the bills right-wingers flew off into a frenzy accusing him of being a big government socialist blowing up the budget while Dubya sat around all day painting pictures of his man-crush, Vladimir Putin.

As long as you enjoy having Middle Eastern gasoline to pump into your car's tank at low, low prices, then you support the United State's continuing involvement in that region.

The alternative is rolling over and leaving our society and way of life to the mercy of religious fanatics who actively hate your guts.

>From somewhere that isn't the United States.
Must suck, being from a backwards, economically crippled Europoor nation teetering on the verge of financial Armageddon. How many centuries has it been since Italy has been relevant on the world stage? Must be hard, living among the glorious ruins of your ancestors and knowing how little your country's opinion matters about anything.

Our biggest mistake was letting Dubya steal the election from Al Gore. 9/11 was blowback to decades of policy written and directed by oil tycoons, including the one currently in the state department. Once Trump is finished imploding, we can get back to the technologies which are going to actually rid us of our shitty relationship with the middle east: electric cars, nuclear power plants, solar cells on every south facing roof exposure.
>>
>>2827014
I mean the part were you talk about how shit italy it is right now is true. And yeah it's one of the 4 europoor country in this continent. Still at least my country will not be remebered as the one who ruined the world and I don't feel like an hypocrite when something bad happens. I mean if some crazy asshole tommorow will make himself explode at least I know it wasn't because I had to put cheap oil in to my trashy american car where I put my fat ass in. Also all great nations fall soon or later. America will be the next one. You had a lucky run now it's time to pay the bill.
Also i agree on the al gore part but I think the real problem started when you elected reagan
>>
>>2827059

>These two idiots think the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan lowered gas prices
People are still this naive? Gas prices were expensive up until last year. The only reason gas went down recently is more production by American companies in the Dakotas and Saudi Arabia trying to flood the market in order to weaken Russia. America didn't get a drop of cheeper oil from Iraq or Afghanistan.

Were already doing it, it called fracking. Coincidently it is also the reason the US was able to lower it carbon emmisions because cheap plentiful natural gas was able to replace coal power plants.

Buchanan was the worst President of the 19th century, with Andrew Johnson a close second.

Hoover was the worst of the 20th century, with Harding hot on his heels.

And for the 21st...not nearly enough time has passed to properly judge Bush Jr. from a historical angle, let alone Obama or Trump (though it's clear that he will NOT be viewed positively by future generations if he keeps on going this way) but so far Dubya has not been treated kindly by presidential historians and I think he'll be viewed pretty negatively unless Trump/future terrible Presidents turn out to be such trash-fires that his shittiness seems positively bucolic in comparison.

>He set in motion the demographic shifts that have polarized America.
Who's to say that another president wouldn't have done this? We'd also need to know how many republicans in congress voted for this, because congress's approval is just as important to getting such a bill passed obviously. Third, it's quite clear that the biggest donors to the Republican party, big business interests, benefited the most from this change economically, if not politically (cubans in florida, for example vs. other latinos who have notoriously low voter turnout) from the flood of cheap immigrant labor. Why do you think no Republican president has ever genuinely addressed the immigrant problem? Why do you think Reagan and Bush were pro-immigration? Why do you think people voted for Trump? (hint: because people actually believed he'd "stop" the immigrant problem because unlike the republican establishment which dodged around the issue for decades Trump was an outsider that had no qualms saying that he actually wanted to get tough on immigrants)

it's the same investigation since last summer.

all they have is that there are a bunch of people in the trump campaign/administration that were contacted by russians. some didn't report it properly or at all.

they have yet to produce any evidence that trump and the russians were working together on anything.

if the investigation or any trial/impeachment concludes before 2020 and trump has beaten it. then he stands a good chance of reelection.

clinton beat his impeachment and his popularity soared.

>You say "innocent" as if they weren't convicted of the rape
sure, but why did the issue to rile up trump that he felt compelled to take an ad out demanding their execution? It was in his right to do so but decision was in the jury's hands not his; to pressure the jury to make a decision to his liking is to betray an ignorance or even a disrespect for the legal process. It's also just bad form to call for the execution of anybody, whether they be convicted criminals or not, and especially for the execution of a group of minors.

until he decided it was more politically profitable to try and get all the hispanic votes by being pro illegal immigrant in his second term.

the democrats want to use demographic change to drive political change. turn the USA into a hispanic majority welfare state. then create an EU like confederation with all the of the Americas.

>how dare politicians make policies to get or maintain voters! that's not how politics works at all!

>the democrats want to use demographic change to drive political change.
there's literally nothing wrong with that. electoral democracy can be described as "using demographic change to drive political change through political party organization." it's like you don't know how politics works.

>until he decided it was more politically
excuse me? do you have proof that he changed tack? immigration still remained a net negative throughout Obama's term while under his republican predecessor mexican immigration dramatically escalated and peaked. Obama also deported a lot more immigrants than Bush. The only thing you can construe as pro-immigrant was his bid to have illegals who had lived since childhood in the US from being kicked out of the country, which got overturned anyway. Otherwise Obama never had the congressional majority to enact immigrant reform even if he wanted to.

>turn the USA into a hispanic majority welfare state.
hmmm. gonna need a source on that. funny thing is that at the moment USA is a white welfare state. Most welfare recipients are white even if blacks and hispanics receive more relative to their size.

>hillary was telling brazillian bankers in her paid speeches that she wanted a Americas wide EU.
hmm, i'll need a link. and even if she said that doesn't mean she believed it. it was a paid feel-good speech after all. and if she did believe it there's no guarantee she would have acted on it. if she wanted to act on it's not clear she'd promote it because of its bad optics. and even if she did actively push it there's no guarantee she'd have succeeded or that she'd have won over congress of the public on it. Just because she's opposition does not make her the Super Villainâ„¢ /pol/ makes her out to be.

>so if Trump did something to cause
First of all a president doesn't have the power to "cause" anything. Mexicans and others immigrated here illegally because they lived in awful conditions at home. They had just as much an incentive to leave than they were scared of being caught at the border. No president caused that (though NAFTA might well have created exacerbated those conditions) Second, your implying that it's democrats alone who are pushing for immigration when I just told you that Obama deported millions and his term was marked by a net decrease in immigration from Mexico. Republicans and their donors have just as much an incentive to allow immigration because it gives firms a huge pool of cheap labor. Why do you think Bush did nothing to stop the mexican immigration when it accelerated during his term? It wasn't cause he was a lovable idiot, it's because business interests lobbied their party to keep the cheap labor coming in.

>eastern european conservatives
If you're implying that hispanic immigrants are democrats by nature, you're wrong. A significant minority voted for Trump and further, those communities that lean democrat didn't turn out to vote, because the demographic are not as engaged as other ethnic groups in the political process. That challenge alone is a steep obstacle to overcome as shown again by the recent presidential election.

cont.
What's more, if republicans tried they could be just as successful at mobilizing hispanics for their own party. The hispanic community is socially conservative and republicans have used this to great effect to gain hispanic votes, as during the anti-gay marriage prop 8 campaign in california. Many more probably lean republican but are repulsed by the republican party's appeal to racist appeals to their white voting base, which is a tried and true tool to garner votes.

>become citizens quickly, to bolster republican votes. that would be ok?
I wouldn't care at all. Republicans already have a range of ways to suppress hispanic and black votes in states they control. I'd prefer that they grant people citizenship than deny citizens their right to a fair vote.

I also wouldn't care because immigration laws only became a thing in the 20th century. Before that US politicians had no qualms cajoling immigrant groups to vote for their parties. The most famous case of this was the northern democrats' wooing of irish immigrants by playing them off against blacks. back then all you had to basically do was sign a piece of paper to become a citizen, after which you'd vote for the democratic party.

even if that were true. it doesn't override the fact that hispanics are all overwhelmingly socialists. latin america is littered with failing nations brought down by attempts at socialism.

Mexico has been ruled almost completely by the socialist party since their early 20th century revolution. see how they have squandered an embarrassment of riches. oil, gas, long growing seasons in multiple climates, two warm oceans, being right next to the most powerful and richest nation on earth.

Bush Jr got the most hispanics of a rebublican at 40 percent. Which I think is because of Texas. Trump got 30 percent.

>calls it a meme
>provides no proof

>declares hispanics socialist by making a questionable generalization about the political history of several dozen countries he's probably never read about

For the first twenty years of the twentieth century Mexico was not socialist. Then within a decade of PRI rule the Great Depression hit for a decade: a unavoidable event during which the government was still able to effect large reforms. Mexico was a dirt poor country up to this time, even when it experienced high economic growth under Porfirio from the 1890s to 1906. Until 1870 the country had almost nonstop political conflict and wars, which left it shaved off decades of potential growth. Despite this, the advent of World War Two was a boon for Mexico and the Post War years were a time of unprecedented growth from 1946 to 1970 known as the Mexican Miracle.

Mexico has also had neoliberal capitalism for almost 30 years and hasn't had the best track record.

tl;dr don't talk about a country's history if you don't know anything

>Bush Jr got the most hispanics of a rebublican at 40 percent. Which I think is because of Texas. Trump got 30 percent.
This proves my points more than yours. Latinos aren't by definition democratic or republican. It all depends on which party courts them better, which the Democrats have done a bit better. If the republican party didn't have the image of the racist party than they'd do even better.

I'm going to go with George W. Bush, Obama, and most likely Trump. They might not be the worst presidents from a political and accomplishment standpoint depending who you are, but I think history will look back on this time period as a moment where America slipped into authoritarian and autocratic tendencies.

Bush and Obama presided over periods where the power of the executive branch grew drastically. Even with a full GOP majority, Trump still looks like he's going to continue the trend. Congress has been rendered a rubber stamp that is bypassed when they fail at that. It doesn't mean Congress is completely blameless, because believe me they are right up there in guilt with everyone else of being corrupt.

What it means is that the presidency has been slowly creeping to this point where a true authoritarian could come right in and basically rule like a dictator should one be elected.

That's not to say that each of these 3 men were/are dictators, it's just that their presidencies will most likely be remembered as an era of rapid presidential concentration of power. To me, that will likely be remembered as a horrible time in American history, should a dictator-like figure take control of the executive branch.

Who knows? I think if it happens it will be within the next 5 years, and there is a high possibility of it happening IMO. The powers that be are ripping the moral fabrics of this country apart for their own gain, and that includes both political parties.

The GOP leads people to directly blame immigrants and groups their voters may have prejudice toward for the problems. Not the people who bring in these immigrants to work for 25 cents/hr picking fruit, or drastically lower pay for high-skilled jobs through the H-1B. Not the government that turns a blind eye to it while raking in millions per year from the benefactors. The Democrats lead their minorities into believing it's the white man who is at fault. Nope, it's not the government that is fueled by special interests who want to pump people into jail for profit or funnel drugs into the country to get people in trouble and addicted to drugs. It's the white man.

People don't realize the tactics are to keep us from becoming one cohesive people that rise against the corruption. They would rather watch us fight one another and tear each others' heads off before actually doing something that will benefit the entire country. By making your own citizens hate one another, you ensure you will never be the target of their wrath. They're just going to keep screwing us while we look and blame the wrong people.

I don't think any of this is done on purpose, which makes it even more scary. I think both parties manipulate this wrath in the people to get themselves into power because they think it won't bring any harm. The people in power today will be seen as near-sighted, greedy individuals who completely destroyed a society to keep themselves in power.

They don't want to see a civil war, but they also care more about their current power and fortunes over the good of the country. It isn't a conspiracy. It's blind greed.
>>
>>2839122
The government is controlled by whites males so it is the white man's fault
>>
>>2839157
Oh don't start this shit. Replacing these white men with blacks and women isn't going to magically change it into something better. The only people who can be successful in running for government are those that either have a lot of money themselves or are able to kiss the most ass in order to raise money. Obama was the first black president, and yet he was no different than the whites who came before him.

Quit falling into the trap, your race and sex have nothing to do with the corruption and greed that is ruining this country.
>>
>>2839199
>the government that is fueled by special interests who want to pump people into jail for profit or funnel drugs into the country to get people in trouble and addicted to drugs.
This government acts on the interests of rich white man and has since the formation of the country. Minorities and women have historically been discriminated against directly and indirectly because and this fact and continues to this day. Obama ran the country for the white man due to the preexisting power structures present in the country.
>>
>>2839255
Whatever.

Keep in mind that most of your punching bag white men had zero influence over the policies that governed them throughout this country's history. The Founders may have been rich white men, but you bet your ass that they wouldn't be caught dead letting farmer Joe of Virginia influence them.

Obama ran the country based on the same exact policies that came before him due to the nature of the political system. This wasn't crafted by a bunch of racists whites who wanted to suppress minorities. It was made by a bunch of rich elites who wanted to gain for themselves without any regard for the common person. It didn't matter if they are stepping on the white or black man. What matters is that the profits and influence keep pouring in.

Obama needed donors just as much as someone like Bill Clinton. When people donate large sums, you listen. Obama received massive amounts of money from Wall Street (http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/mar/07/hillary-clinton/hillary-clinton-barack-obama-set-new-wall-street-f/). What do you think he is going to do? Tell the people who funded his candidacy to fuck off when he's elected?

Nope.

Obama did exactly as those who came before him did and drew up legislation and policy that benefited the wealthy donors. He still even pissed them off to the point of sending in less money in 2012 due to a few token regulations he enacted in his first term. After the worst financial meltdown since the 1930's, you kind of had to do something to make people a little content. He didn't do nearly enough though.

I may have went off on a little tangent there, but it still stands that the greed and corruption running our government does not discriminate. A black woman wanting power is just as corruptible as a white man wanting power.
>>
>>2839360
>Obama ran the country based on the same exact policies that came before him due to the nature of the political system. This wasn't crafted by a bunch of racists whites who wanted to suppress minorities.
It kinda was though.
Dont get me wrong I completely agree with main points of your post I just don't see why you are denying the racial element that persists through American society at large aswell as its institutions. It is possible for you to discriminate against more than 1 group with different levels of severity.
>>
>>2839389
I agree that discrimination exists, but I think that the recent push to focus on that as the underlying reason for so many problems with our political system is one of the main reasons it won't get fixed. A lot of people think pushing for diversity of gender and skin color in government will magically make it work for the people. That just isn't true, as power tends to attract those who are willing to jump through flaming hoops to get it.

I think that if you first focus on how the elites and rich manipulate us into prejudices instead of the actual prejudices themselves, you can solve these problems. People don't just wake up one day saying they want to be racist, it takes someone talking from a lectern, calling blacks superpredators and immigrants rapists, to rile up that hatred. Those people do that because it gets them elected without bringing up the problems plaguing each and every one of us plebs.

I don't think there's a distinction between Bush's failure to act and Clinton's supposed creation of the Recession, for which you haven't even provided evidence.
