How did these two states square off over the centuries, in terms of natural resources, military might, wealth, population? Was Korea ahead at any point in time? Is Korea even more resource-poor than Japan, except in iron and coal?

Obviously, Korea was vastly ahead of Japan in the early days. Almost everything that the Nips got was transmitted from China via Korea.
I doubt it was ever better after Japan got its shit together, because Korea was never truly as united as Japan, and it constantly got fucked others.
