Hypothetically, could the Roman Empire at it's peak take on Medieval Europe?
>>
I think the Romans would put up a good fight.
>>
>>2823663
It couldn't even take on some tribes in Germany, so I doubt it.
>>
>>2823663
totally depends on which part of the medieval era you're referring to, but early medieval definitely since at that point it was a bunch of small kingdoms with the same technology as the Roman Empire but worse manpower and organization
>>
>>2823663
Most likely not, unless it was the early medieval period.

If Medieval Europe could present a united front, no.

But since that would hardly be the case, yes, without question, the empire was capable of fielding ten times as many men than any kingdom, with only slight technological inferiority. With more even training too.
>>
>>2823663
No, it took Nazi Germany to actually conquer Europe.

I spent the last hour preparing a thread, I never make threads, but decided today I will make a statement, only to find that this place is not allowing new posts, so I'm going to post it here.

There are many factors to why the Roman Empire fell, one of them must be the sudden deaths of Valentinian II in 392 AD and Flavius Constantius in 421 AD, which left the Western Empire without heirs. Thus Stilicho and Aetius became the defacto rulers of the Western Empire in the absence of a legitimate ruler. Both men could not wield absolute power in the face of external problems as they were not Emperor and persistently needed to fight inwardly first to gain power of the Empire.

The two events that occurred while both Emperors reigned were the hardest blows the Empire suffered:

1) Under the reign of Honorius and regency of Stilicho, the Rhine Invasion occurred 406 AD, which ultimately led to the invasion of North Africa by the Vandals, Alans, and Suebi in 429 AD.

2) Under the reign of Valentinian and after the regency of Galla Placidia, Attilla the Hun invaded the Eastern Roman Empire in 441 AD, and then invaded the Western Roman Empire in 451 AD.

Preceding both of these events, there was no valid Emperor who could react to these problems, while Honorius was a child, Stilicho became the defacto ruler of the Empire, and by the time Honorius came of age, Stilicho had the continuity of leadership which undermined the role of Emperor, the same event occurred under Valentinian with Aetius.

Both Emperors assassinated the the defacto rulers, which not only ended their lives, but ended the continuity or power that they wielded, a purge was carried out after the assassination of Stilicho.

So one of the main factors for the Fall of the West was Child Emperors.

probably

though equipment isn't as good I think they'll outnumber most medieval armies not to mention their adaptive skills that can bridge the gap and their diplomacy skills that can pin the kingdoms against one another

though maybe I'm overestimating them
>>
>>2823679
Those german tribes numbered 50k+ combatans

They didnt have armies that large in medieval Europe.
>>
>>2826073
What happened to the population in that area? The HRE more or less covers the territory of ancient Germania, so why couldn't the Holy Romans levy a similar number of troops as the Germanic tribes?
>>
>>2826085
I need an answer to this
>>
>>2826085
that's a fuckin good question
I suppose there became "urban" centres into the prelude of the great migration that led it to be so devestating? that would be my guess
>>
>>2826085
In my uneducated opinion, probably due to its decentralized nature- vassals tend to be reluctant to give their armies away to a central authority.
>>
>>2823663
I count two Roman Empires int that picture, OP
