The Renaissance was 300 years ago by the time unification happened. Italy had been a powerless prize passed around for hundreds of years by then. Unification allowed them some measure of relevance.

Zürich isn't a city-state. The remaining city-states of the world are Singapore, Andorra, Monaco, and Vatican; arguably Hong Kong, Macao, and Gibraltar could be considered such as well. Of these Singapore and Hong Kong are the only ones that matter.

Singapore is the only true city state left.

Nation states are hardly a thing anymore. It's more like economic-blocs, corporate entities, financial institutions, and consumer groups. Nation states are only a facade at this point.
