Consider that there is:
>luck in being born with a high IQ
>luck in being born with good genes to attract the opposite sex without trying
>luck in not being bullied and hence developing poor social interaction skills later in life
>luck in choosing friends you can trust
>luck in learning new things with little difficulty
>luck in having good mental health and not killing yourself after persistent failures
Are there any points of our lives which we actually have any control of? Is free will just a big fat illusion?

Read Rawls, you'll like his argument for justice and a fair society

Free will regards how we deal with challenges tbqh.
Plus, you are talking more about happiness right now.

Your conscious mind allows you to navigate the present with an eye on the further-than-immediate future. It allows you to plan ahead very efficiently and quickly adapt to varying circumstances.
You can also make decisions that affect your abilities themselves, improve your mental health, overcome shit luck.
Of course all these things work better the smarter you are, and you can't do shit about your physical health. However, you are still forging yourself within the limits your genes set. There is a variety of possible states that you yourself can select and then materialize.
>luck in choosing friends you can trust
That's not luck, it's intelligence and experience.
>luck in learning new things with little difficulty
That's the same as having a high IQ.
Consider that crossposting the same thread on multiple boards is a bit rude

>Its called skill and determination.
Its called superior survival instincts. Your body was just naturally prepared to fight back and overpower the bully.

you look at your life and see 'bad luck' where you can choose to see yourself as incredibly lucky just as easily
I do not know you, but if you post here it probably means
you are young, you have time and health
you know how to read and write, you have internet
you live in a time of peace and are able to question your own free will.
Use what you have
what alternative is there but to stew in your own 'unluckiness'
