They made the typical communist mistake of trying to make too many radical changes all at once.

They thought they could empty out the cities and create the perfect, self-sufficient agrarian communist society straight away, while replacing all of the country's social and religious institutions with a violent police state powered by revolutionary zeal.

It turns out that all the intermediary steps before achieving a perfect communist society are kinda necessary if you don't want to kill a quarter of your country's population in under 5 years.
