So I just finished an argument with my friend where he claimed:

>Racism wasn't a thing until the black slaves of the U.S

I told him that the romans saw all non-romans as barbarians (First thing that came to my head)

>He said that that was solely about culture and nothing to do with race.

On a scale from 1 to CNN, how blue pilled is my friend?
>>
>>2808702
Oh my god go back to/pol/.
And I hate to say it but racism has always been a thing in varying degrees.

Kin-selection and discrimination against out-groups is the basis of evolutionary behaviour. Almost every single species has a form of tribalism. We are just at a stage of globalization where, with the meetings of radically different races, tribalism is extending to a racial basis.

Immediate family > clan > tribe > ethnos > race
>>
Romans absolutely distinguished between races. Just like Nordic supremacist think they are the kang race, ancient Meds thought they were the perfect balance between North and South.
>>
>>2808713
I wasn't being racist or offensive in any way, chill with the pearl clutching
>>
>>2808717
I'm at a point where my immediate family > everything else. And everything else doesn't have a particular order, it's all meaningless to me since I don't even know them. I would fight for my family, but never my ethnicity, race, country or tribe. it's too arbitrary a reason to die for,
>>2808720
>Anonymous 05/14/17(Sun)08:16:54 No.2808720▶
That's ethnic differences though, racism is discrimination based on race. And biologically Romans were of the same race as their neighbors. Unless you believe race is a social construct, which it also sort of it is, and you change your definition of race.
>>
>>2808793

That's a typically individualistic white thing. Do you live in an all white community?
>>
>>2808793
If a roman saw someone on the street who looked like them without hearing them speak then they would think them to be roman.
If they saw another person who's skin was so different they would most likely be foreign they most likely wouldn't perceive them as roman, so race is relevant.
>>
>>2808702
your friend is kind of right. the roman empire absorbed many different races from africa to britain and were very mixed. the way we think about race started during the enlightenment. ancient people didn't have the same concepts.
>>
so u b sayin racism wasn't a concept until disparate races started interacting with each other on a mass scale n shiet?

really slinkies my winkies
>>

Ibn Khaldun (14th century)

...beyond [known peoples of black West Africa] to the south there is no civilization in the proper sense. There are only humans who are closer to dumb animals than to rational beings. They live in thickets and caves, and eat herbs and unprepared grain. They frequently eat each other. They cannot be considered human beings. Therefore, the Negro nations are, as a rule, submissive to slavery, because (Negroes) have little that is (essentially) human and possess attributes that are quite similar to those of dumb animals, as we have stated."

Sounds pretty racist to me.
>>
>>2808702
Racism = Discrimination (differenciation) of race

What the Romans did was closer to xenophobia, as ancient people had different concepts of race.

And racism wasn't a big deal until very recently, nobody bought slaves because they were black, blacks were just the only people being kicked around by everyone else enough to be sellable into slavery.
>>
>>2808889
Altough everything he writes sounds pretty accurate, I do recall reading that muslims leaders did a lot of mental gymnastics to justify the slave trade.
>>
>>2808899
lol blacks were prized as slaves because it was believed they were the only ones capable of hard labor in the tropic environments in the Americas and the Caribbean

racialism is inherent part of chattel slavery in the new world (and in the old world too as a matter of fact where the Barbary pirates prized European women with light features as sex slaves)
>>
>>2808910
Source, give it to me.
>>
>>2808702

Your friend is right and you're retarded. People have always been xenophobic, and it's easier to be xenophobic and perceive one as the other when they're black or blonde or whatever.

But the Romans were definitely not "racist" in any kind of modern sense.

It's only when people got civilized enough to think that slaves were immoral that they started rationalizing why it was okay to keep certain people as slaves, and race was an easy thing to go by. Older civilizations didn't give a fuck since they would enslave their own citizens if they rebelled, along with the foreigners.
>>
>>2808702

Tell him to read some fucking Aristotle.
>>
>>2808889
the greeks and romans said the same shit about white barbarians they enslaved. I remember reading something like "it is better for them to live as slaves in civilization rather than as beasts in the wild"
>>
>>2808937

>Aristotle

You'll have to give me the exact quote for that, pumpkin.

The first thinker to classify the peoples of the world as White, Black, Asian, and Native American was groundbreaking Swedish zoologist Carl von Linne, in the mid-18th century.

He attributed to the races all the same temperamental traits we associate with them today.

Post quote pls?

Honestly racism in the modern sense really WASN'T a thing at least until the colonial era. Prejudice certainly was, but the lines were drawn on ethnic/national/linguistic lines, not "racial" ones.

Race doesn't really even make sense as a concept when your outlook is regional rather than global. It's not that the Romans were tolerant or progressive, it's that it doesn't really make sense to call them "racist" when the range of peoples they dealt with were as limited as they were. When you know the national/ethnic origin of everybody you're gonna meet and you never have to deal with cases of mixed/indistinct origin the way we do now, there's really no need to lump a bunch of ethnically and linguistically diverse people from thousands of miles apart together as "Asians" or "black people."
>>
>>2808978
But to say that it started in the U.S with slavery is beyond autistic.
>>
>>2808972
I would anon but I'm on a tablet, either way "race realism" of the 17th and 18th centuries certainly pushed the idea that africans were ideal for the tropic environments of the American south and the Caribbean etc as laborers.
>>
>>2808986
It's americans who created that meme and spread it trough the world using their own cultural dominance across the globe.

Your whole country is literally made up of self-hating betas.
>>
>>2808986

The Americans were hardly the only people to have black slaves. Also, the French mistreated the people in their colonies in ways so brutal that it it makes American slavery seem like an episode of the Kardashians. They were fucking inhuman.

It's amazing to me the kind of crimethink stopgaps people have about the very concept of race. You'd think it was more disturbing than the fucking Necronomicon, when it could be just a basic fact is human life.
>>
>>2809009
By "meme" I was referring to racism being an American thing.

It was you yourselves who created that idea.
>>
>>2809020
At first it was cities vs villages, then my religion vs yours, then my nation vs yours, now it's my race vs yours.

In the future it'll be my planet vs yours, etc, etc.

You people need to stop using the word "autistic" to mean "something I disagree with." I'm not offended, it's just fucking stupid.

Saying that "racism" originated specifically in America is a bit of a stretch (I'd just say that it originated with colonialism) but your friend's claim isn't "autistic." Just hard to support.
>>
>>2809068
You need to stop telling other people what to do, because you don't like it.
>>
I think when people talk about racism being American, they mean the racialised nature of chattel slavery and legal codes which persisted for centuries and still have lasting effects today.
>>
>>2808727
I'm sorry man I saw blue pill and instantly got triggered.
Before the /pol/ diaspora became so large discussions on controversial topics on various boards were some of the most interesting. There always was a nazi or a filthy Trotskyist but I didn't get booty bothered like I do now.

>solely about culture and nothing to do with race.
What did he mean by this?
>>
>>2809090
That people who were culturally roman were better than those who were non-roman culturally, with nothing to do with race.
>>
>>2809095
Yes, but that's all race is. Nigger is a mindset, not a skin color.
>>
>>2809102
I wanna say black is not a skin color but that'd be a lie.

Anyway you know what I mean, race is definitely biological. Culture has nothing to do with race and therefore discriminating cultures isn't discriminating races.
>>
>>2809102
Preaching to the choir, but that's not what i'm discussing. the main idea of race is still a physical one, thus my question.
>>
>>2808807
That's a different definition of race though, which proves that race is indeed a social construct.
>>
>>2808802
Nope, I'm Asian.
>>
>>2809009
>>2809039
Thats still American, anything from the "New World" is American.
>>
>>2809203
There isn't an english word to describe a citizen of the United States.
>>
>>2809193
Everything is a social construct
>>
>>2809105
As I've said before, race in the sense of dog breeds doesn't exist. Race as we understand it in humans is just a set of traits that tend to correlate with each other in certain demographics. For example, someone with dark skin is more likely to have sickle cell anemia than someone with light skin. However, the population groups in which these traits tend to group in a statistically significant manner are much smaller than what you get if you just glance at someone's skin color.

"White" and "black" are as useless as "brown" in a discussion of ethnicity. Separate those into Celt and German and Semite and Bantu and Khoikhoi and Malagasy and Pashtun and Inuit and Nahua and many more and then you have the basis for a meaningful comparison.

There is all sorts of evidence for discrimination against different ethnic or cultural groups of the same skin color throughout history. Even in the US today there still exists discrimination against Jewish and Irish people, although no longer to the same extent as many other groups. Racism in general is better defined in terms of culture, with skin color being one of several quick and easy indicators of culture.

Hurricanes aren't a social construct.
>>
>>2809231
American = people of the american continent(s)
Amerifat = US americans
>>
>>2809397
They're just spinning wind bruh, like it's just us humans who separate them and categorize them, category 5 hurricanes don't exists bruh

Then brown eyes should be removed from the gene pool along with the abominable race of Floridians.
