Popular culture aside, I remember a documentary (History Channel IIRC) where the "occult" practices of the higher echelons of the NSDAP. Was there any evidence on this or just speculation fueled by sensationalism?

Yes especially Himmler believed so. Look up Helena Blavatsky and Guido List because they inspired the occult nazi beliefs. The nazis believed in ancient nordic gods and spiritualism and that the aryan race once ruled the world before jews destroyed the societies one by one.
