"Jew" can refer either to an adherent of judaism (the religion) or an ethnic jew. To be an ethnic jew, by the traditions of ethnic jews, you need to have an ethnic jewish mother, making you a Jew in the same way one might be an "Englishman"

To be a "Jew" the way you might be a "Christian" you just have to believe in the religion

Yeah, which is especially confusing because there are Black Jews irl. But there is a difference between the racist and nationalist Black Israelites (not real jews, just crazy), and the normal Black Jews from Ethiopia.
