Rousseau is still important as fuck because his social contract theory was of vital importance for the switch from heavenly mandate to national self determination. Even if it isn't particularly the direction he wanted contemporary politics to take.

People love tocqueville, especially americans, because of his treatise on american democracy. Although I do like his ancient regime and revolution book. Probably the better one of the two imho.

Where it is I live, he's slightly discarded though brought up sometimes in philosophy class, but people are a bit hesitant of bunching him up with the other Enlightenment authors since he was a bit late to the party, and so gets forgotten about.
