I don't usually post here, but I'm going to assume that this is the correct board for fine art discussion because /ic/ is all concept art, anime, and porn.
What are your thoughts on Basquiat?
From what I've observed, people on the Internet seem to have mixed opinions on him, but I absolutely love his work.
For me, he's one of the greatest artists of the 20th century (just a tier below Picasso and Matisse).
I've seen some people say that his work is a case of "the emporer's now clothes", but I couldn't disagree more. Although his work does have a naive quality, he embraces the naïveté in order to create something unique and expressive.
Not to mention the astounding complexity of his work. Each painting contains a vast amount of information and references that work like a visual puzzle that are fun to work out as a viewer.

The argument that if he was white nobody would have cared is a tough one to make. You truly can't know what would have happened if he was white because he wasn't. Perhaps he was exoticized, which could've led to his fame. But you can't know for sure. It's kinda pointless to talk about.
I agree that it is a real tragedy that he died so young. He was only 27, which is astounding. I wish I could see how he would've developed had he never done heroin.
But perhaps the fact that he died young is part of the reason he is still remembered today. He's the classic tortured artist archetype who was consumed by his own success. His life story is really fascinating.

Seems like more mediocre modernism. Not that it's terrible bad, I mean it looks like something you'd see while looking out the window of a train going to New York.
